I have 1996 Honda civic at 250k, never had engine problem, but it was little loud. The Hynes book says it is because it needs valve adjustment. So i got the tools, and thet special tool to adjust the valve distance, i think intake is 0.08, and eexaust is 0.10 inches. I did all of that, and now engine is loder. Does anybody have an idea what did i do wrong? Basically, on all of the valves i loosen up the screw, because it seemd like valves was to close, i thought that was the reason for loud engine. Any help appreciated.

 

You must have done something wrong.

I know it was probably a typo but the exhaust is supposed to be .010. You did adjust each valve when they were on the flat part of the cam, right? There is a specific order that you have to do it, and you have to turn the motor over between each adjustment. I know you probably did this, but I just thought I would make sure lol.

There are several writeups on adjusting valves, I would re-read them just to make sure you didn't forget anything.

 

Yes, i meant 0.010, and i did turn the motor at each adjustment. I don't know what you meant by adjusting the valves when they were on the flat part of the cam. Maybe that's where i messed it up. Can you be more specific? Thank you .

 

like drty said you should reread and try again. But from peronal experience after I set all the valves I spin the engine a couple of more times after finishing and then go back and recheck the valves.
I mostly work on motorcycles, but it is suprising to see that sometimes valves will setttle funny after and adjustment.

 

The thing is it is not easy to aling the TDC perfectly, maybe thats what it is. Or i removed the spark plugs before adjusting the valves. Shouldn't have i done it ?

 

you must turn the motor over until the 2 valves you are adjusting are closed. the flat part of the cam lobe will be on the rocker arm and the tall part of the cam lobe will be face away from the rocker or in the upwards position. then stick the feeler gauge between the rocker arm tappet and the tip of the valve. if its loosen tighten the screw until you can pull the feeler gauge in and out with little friction.
