Default Is it okay to impact on the spindle nut?

My 1/2 inch torque wrench only goes to 150 and the torque spec is 181. I don't have the money right now to upgrade. Would it be okay just to tighten it with the 3/4 in impact and stake the nut? Any chance of bending anything?

Of course the book states not to use an impact as damage may occur to the tranny gears, differential and such.

Personally, I am stronger than a 1/2" impact so I just do it by hand without hurting my back. If I cant get something apart with a breaker bar and a cheater bar then I get the 3/4", if that dont do it, then out comes the flame wrench.

Yeh, I wouldn't recommend an impact gun either. It's far better on everything concerned to use a large (read that as huge) ratchet and a length of pipe (as an extension handle) and twist that puppy off.
And yes, rent a torque wrench and set it to the recommended 180.
Damage that nut, and you'll never get it off again.

just go rent a 1/2" drive torque wrench and torque the nut to the proper spec

Half inch doesn't go to 150. I have a 1/2 in torque wrench. I always use the 3/4 in impact to get it off. U cant twist harder than it. It is 1400 ft/lb max. It busts through the unbustable. I don'tget the problem of using it to take it off. I just have to figure out what place rents a 3/4 in torque wrench, if any.

If you don't mind dealing with microcracks in the differential gears.....

Never had a car with a differential...I have had axle nuts that wouldn't come off no matter what hand tools I've threw at it. Impact was the only thing that worked, and i've never had a problem with anything.

Uhhhhmmmmm, if you had a del sol or a civic like your screen name implies, you've had a car with a differential. In fact, I can't think of a modern car without a diff.

My bad, I had a brain fart and got the differential mixed up with the intermediate shaft. I just don't see how using an impact to take on or off the axle nut could mess up anything. I've searched and hundreds of techs use the impact. So what gives?

Impact is ****in fine holmes...

Micro cracks in the Carier??? Um thats new on me. I break ALOT of tranny ****, but not 1 Diff .....(Ive run more than one each OEM open and LSD, aftermarket LSD too).... And i pound them on good. I have to.
My car rips the teeth off of gears under power once in a while... Have a Straightcut forged box now. But no "microcracks"... and the ***** been maged.

My 1/2 drive Snap On goes to 250 ft/lb. Also, people need to learn to read. It's 134 ft/lb on the axle nut. 181 Nm. The letters after the number mean A LOT.

Torque specifications: 181 Nm (18.5 kgf-m, 134 lbf-ft)

most common problem with putting too much torque on axle nut is killing a wheel bearing.
