Default Coolant Purging

I know it takes a long time to purge the cooling system on my 95 Accord, but I just want to make sure that I am doing this right exactly. Now I fill the radiator to the top and start the car from cold. I let it warm up (fans cycle on) Now is the plug behind the EGR valve, should I open that when the car is running, because when I do, the coolant level comes up more into my no spill funnel, then when its closed while running the coolant level goes back down again. I had let it run for about an hour with that valve closed, and the level stayed pretty even. got great heat, and all.

It even helped even out my "surging" idle problem. I am typing this up because the time that I had let it purge, still every once in a while the idle will go up and down like all the hondas do, so I was just wondering if I should purge it more, or for longer periods of time. I heard of some people having to raise the front end up to purge these things? Is it possible I have to pull the front end up on my ramps to purge it? Thanks for listening!

ClarkS40, if I'm understanding you correctly, you are trying to fill your cooling system after a repair or hose replacement. If this is all that you're doing, the solution is very simple. On top of the thermostat housing (back side of the head, on the passenger side) there is a bleeder/air purge valve, similar to the ones found on brake calipers. Crack that valve and fill the radiator until you have coolant coming out of that valve. Close the valve and continue as usual.
I hope that helps

In extreme cases yes, but the standard proceedure works most of the time.
It's more like one of those things you do whenever everything else doesn't work.

Ok, well I appreciate it, I just wanted to make absolutely sure if I needed to have the car turned off or running if it was open, to make sure I wasnt sucking air back into the cooling system while it was running. Thanks a bunch guys!
