over a 17"+ wheel:

weight
adjusts to a shorter gear ratio = greater acceleration/decreased top speed
better choices for rubber

i run a 16x7.5 wheel for the street and a 15x7 wheel for drag racing.

IDK, I think there is way more selection of good tires in the 17" range.

that depends on the tire size you choose to run. i know you know this but it's all about overall diameter, not only the rim. you could run a 15'' rim and still have the same ratio as a 16'', 17'', or 18''. for example, for a 5th gen, i believe the stock size is 205/50/16. the overall diameter of this setup is 24.1''. now change that into a 15'' rim and you need to up the size of the tire from 205/50 to 205/55 and you get a overall diameter of 23.9" this means your speedo reads 60 you're really going 59.5mph. not a big difference really. it's simple, more rim, less tire. but if you chose the same aspect ratio for for 15'', the overall diameter will bee 23.1" which would change the ratio.

edit: weight also plays a big role but that's a different story, unsprung weight ftl.
