H22A4 timing belt sliding off
I am replacing the water pump, timing belt, auto tensioner, balance shaft belt, and cam seals on my friends 99 prelude H22A4.
I replaced the water pump and cam seals. I put everything back together, and as I was rotating the crank to seat the belts and double check timing, I noticed the timing belt was sliding off towards the balance shaft belt to the point where it started rubbing against the tensioner for the balance shaft belt. I did a search and could not find anything related to this issue since my friend is retaining his auto tensioner.
I removed the balance shaft belt and timing belt, then rechecked the cam gears to make sure they were not offset from each other. I put the timing belt on again only to have it slide off upon rotation.
I checked the belt itself and it seemed pretty straight. I replaced the brand new auto tensioner thinking maybe it wasn't providing enough tension. After installing the timing belt again, it slid off again. I noticed that where it starts sliding off is from the pulley on the timing adjuster. I took the belt off again, and retightened the bolts for the timing adjuster. I noticed slight play even with all three bolts tightened (the two that go through the water pump and the one through the pulley. There is also slight play where the sleeved section of the adjuster goes over the water pump, which I think is normal as it feels the same way over the old water pump.
Now, what do I check and where should I go from here? I'm still having the same problem and would really like to avoid buying any unnecessary parts.

hey, yeah i actually read your thread while searching a few days ago. i know for sure there is no washer behind the stud that goes through both of the tensioner pulleys. in addition, im not too sure a washer between the two pulleys would help since the belt comes almost halfway off the gears/pulleys to the point where it runs into the balance shaft tensioner pulley...

remember this is for a h22a4 with the auto tensioner. if there was a washer behind the stud, it for sure wasn't there before either.
can anyone verify this for the h22a4? i know there isnt a washer in the parts diagram.
also as far as that stud being bent, it does not seem bent upon visual inspection. its a completely different looking stud from the one in your thread...the non threaded shaft section of the stud is much bigger and it doesnt look like it could get bent very easily.
i also am still trying to figure out if the play in the timing adjuster is normal with everything torqued down. could this play be coming from the collar in the adjuster? or possibly from a bent stud?

Are we talking about the auto-tensioner? Yes I'm sure I installed it properly. Really just a matter of two bolts and reloading it, then unloading it once the belt is slipped on.
any other ideas? do you think if i added a washer behind the tensioner stud, effectively offsetting the timing belt tensioner pulley further away from the block, this would reduce the sliding of the belt?
i ran into this problem twice with the h22a4 motors
the problem with mines was defective water pumps from honda
if you are still having problems try installing the old water pump and turn the
motor over by hand a few times and see if it corrects the belt

no it was not installed because the very first time i put back the timing belt and balance
shaft belt, the timing belt was sliding off. it slid off to the point where the timing belt was touching the balance shaft tensioner pulley.
when i tried the old water pump i didnt put back on the balance shaft belt at all.

The balancer shaft pulley is supposed to keep the belt from coming off. Just like the B series has the washer guides. We use the balancer belt pulley. The back of the pulley should be smooth so that when it touches, it doesn't harm the belt.
so the belt hanging a little bit off of the cam gears is also ok? i guess i wont know if the belt touches the valve cover until i put everything back together...
