1992 Accord - Gas Mileage
Anyone can help me on why my 1992 Accord with 68,000 miles is not getting the right gas mileage? Im getting less then 20 miles per gallon. It's been tune-up already. I've replaced the cap and rotor, spark plug and wires, new distributor, new cover valve gasket, and oil pan gasket. However, starting the cold engine in the morning my idle goes to 1500rpm, then to 1100rpm, until it goes to the normal speed 800-900rpm. But changing the gear to drive I can feel the steering wheel vibrates violently, but if I put the car in neutral the vibration stops. The vibration comes only when the car is in drive or when I stopped at the stop light. After a while when the engine is fully warm, the vibrations stop. Fuel injector service or replacing my fuel filter perhaps will solve my problems? Your comments and advices will greatly appreciated!!!
dont worry, mine gets crappy gas milage as well, 92 accord ex.. emissions estimated 14mpg.. lol its sad.
edit: fuel filter helps, and make sure your idle is set right, if its too low it shakes like a bitch..

My 91ex gets all right gas milage. I think I get about 23-26 highway. I did get from Dallas to Austin once on 3 gallons of gas once. 2 Mail trucks let me sit between them so I pretty much drafted the whole way. Sure was nice, don't think I gave it gas more than a couple of times in 3 hours. You guys probably think I am lying, but assure you that I am not.
Oh ya, my wifes 97SE gets about 25 MPG no matter where or when she drives it.

Basically if you do all city driving with the A/C on it's hard to get even 20 mpg.
Anyone that thinks they can get over 25 MPG in city driving doesn't live in LA, DC, or NYC.

Samething with my gf's former 93 Accord EX. The car had 73k when we sold it 2 months ago, purchase brand new from the honda dealer. We were averaging 20mpg and the thing was the car was BONE STOCK, never beat on and mainternance work all up to date. Did the full tune-up, spark plug, cap&rotor, air filter, fuel filter, spark plug wire and it didn't help much either. Everything was OEM too except the air filter. I even cleaned out TB and it still didn't help. I was lost as to why I wasn't getting better gas mileage even though the car drove like a champ. My only conclusion was that it needed a valve adjustment, something I didn't get around to do since my gf sold it for a 94 Integra gsr.
my 90 accord ex did 420 miles with a full tank driving from milwaukee into st.paul minnesota with advanced timing...city driving it did about 325 miles...now is that strange???
My 1990 accord only gets like 280 miles for a full fill-up. Is this bad? tia
Oh, and the steering column on mine also likes to vibrate violently.
argh, another edit. The car has 79k miles on it if that makes any difference.

Damn...
Mine has 80k miles and got 28 mpg with mostly hwy doing 80-85...it's an automatic...
Got 26 on the next tank driving it to work (60% hwy doing 80-85)
My Trans Am has 370 HP and avg's 21-22 mpg and can push close to 30 mpg doing 90 mph in 6th gear at 2k rpms...I'll be damned if this 140 HP Accord gets less than it does!!

Does gettin bigger rims effect anything? Ive got some 17's on mine. Im thinkin it should but wasnt sure. I get about 250 miles on a a full tank on my 92 2.2L Accord LX. But ive heard my friend say he gets like close to 300 and sometimes 325.
rims can make a large difference in gas milage. I just pulled a 178,000 mile engine out of my 91 ex that would average 24 miles to the gallon (I've been keeping track of it to compare to the new motor).
First off, the size of our tanks is 15 gallons right? Well, i've been averagine 22.5 MPG w. A/C on this summer. and my car like to vibrate like hell when i put it in reverse with the a/c blasting.
