Default First 1/4 run in the 98 GSR

So, tonight I went to the Jackson raceway to run the 1/4 for the first time in my new GSR. The only performance mod my car has is an AEM CAI. Also, I have only had my car for 1 1/2 weeks so, lets say I havent masted my clutch yet. My first run down I was sooo scared, brought it to around 4k, and tried my best at featering out. Cut a shitty 60 of 2.6, missed the shift to second, took a year to get back in..Finished up in the top of 3rd at 83. Get the slip, a ******* 17.2. Doh. BTW, The whole time I was running against my friend in his RSX base 5spd. He has had it about 2 months now. He ran a 17.3

Next run, about the same start, 2.5s 60, missed 3rd, ahhhhhhhh...finished up with a 16.9 at 83 again. RSX, around 17.3...

Run 3, Wishing I could paddle through the gears smoothly, here we go. Get to the line, thought I had a decent start, pulled a 2.6s 60, ****. Fortunately this time I made it through all the gears safely. that must have helped my time because I finished with a 16.7 at 84. I was a little happy but Knew I needed to drop the 60. I ran alone tha ttime because the right lane was closed off for a oil leak.

Fourth and final run. I was looking to drop my 60 some, and run at least a 16.5 w/ good shifts. I come up and stage, then take off the line. the start seemed awesome, but realistically was only a 2.55. Paddled through the gears perfectly. O ya, jumped way the hell past the RSX right from teh start. Kept walking slowly. Well, here is the slip

R/T.... .622
60...... 2.55
330... 7.037
ET @ 594ft .. 9.9
1/8... 10.664
1/8 mph.. 67.55
1/4 ... 16.42
1/4 mph. 84.44

Well I was pretty happy w/ that. I Know it's not a mid 15 or anything, but for my first time out I was happy. i would have got more runs in but we got there late and the track kept stopping for random ****. Our track is in a pretty redneck part of South Carolina, so they treat the few imports like ****. One thing that I did and didn't like was the fact that it is required to wear a helmet. It sucked because that could be causing shitty 60's. I couldnt really hear my tires or car to well so It just felt weird. Some things I can throw in to help me justify the sorry times: Helmet so hard hearing, hot weather(mid-high 80s), full tank of 93 instead of half or 1/4, full interior, and did not lower tire pressure(not even sure what it is) what should it be for racing?

Finally, would you review my times and tell me would I could do to change. obiviously more practice and better 60's. tonight was the first time I raced from 1st gear. haha.

O ya, racing for the first time was straight up bad ***. It is a huge adrenaline rush. for anyone that hasnt done it I would reccomend it highly!!

What elavation are you at? that seems high even for your first time out. When I took my Accord(stock 95' ex coupe) to the track for the first time after having it for only three days I was able to go from a 16.8 down to a 16.2 and I never even raced it before. But I am at sea level. Either way sac raceway is a crappy track. I want to take t to sears point and see what it could do there. Good luck with bringing it down.

I believe the track is at sea level, but I am not sure about that. If it means anything, there is a VW GTI VR6 w/ a 65 shot of NOS and he runs high 14's. Also, a celica GT-S w/ I/E was only running mid to low 15's, and he was a decent driver. Both were running 2.1 or 2.2 60's. Maybe the track is just slow. Either way it is hella fun

I know how you feel. When I got my 2001 GS-R in July of 2001 we went to the track (Englishtown) I ran a 16.5 (stock) So a few weeks later I got a AEM CAI and went down to a 15.9. Granted once you get used to your car and how it hooks up you'll get better. Man get some slicks like I did and you'll drop your 60ft times. Now I am down to a 15.02 w/ the mods I have. Just practice!!!

practice, you should be able to get you 60' down to least 2.3-2.4 on streets, and your 1/4 to mid 15's.....don't feel bad i've had friends stall their cars at the line (big time racers-of course) i was laughing so hard i almost cryed

it's good to have an honest answer. most people won't hit 15.0 on their first outting @ the track, and that needs to be known.

keep up the practice, and you'll significantly lower your times! and have fun!

Thanks for the help guys. I have a few pointers now for the next time I head to the track. My goal will be 15's, which I think will be easily attainable.

Also that is so true what obd2gsr said. Driving at the track is sooo different from the street

Hey man, I know windsor spring road is damn close to where I live, I just can't picture exactly where it is right now. It is within 15 minutes I believe. I think me and my dad are going to Jackson this thursday night, and he is going to run his 300ZX TT for the first time. We are shooting for 12's Let me know when you get in to Augusta. Maybe we can meet at the strip this thursday? Let me know

Yea that crap is a POS. We will probably have the Z and the Teg up there, but I'm pretty sure only my dad will run. I am gonna wait until it's a little colder before I go again I think. Do you have anything I could look for when I'm there to spot you out? Are you gonna be running? If so I could easily spot your car out and come over. BTW, what do you drive again?

your 60 ft should be 2.3xx with the stock tires...or 2.2xx with some sporty street tires....with my gsr I would launch from ~5500 rpms, slip the clutch quickly, but dont let the rpms fall below 5000. once it grabs...go.

your probably shifting slow and too early...your mph is pretty low...

shift right at redline, but make sure you don't hit fuel cut, that will kill your times.

i ran a 15.68 @ 88 mph in my gsr as i got it from the dealer...hadn't touched a thing on it....i believe that was also the first time i raced it at the track.

there is no torque, so you have to use the power up top to get you off the line...but do so without spinning...

its very hard to explain...practice is you're friend

good luck

Thanks for the tips 01GSR. As I said I was a very novice driver when I went up there. Since then I actually improved my shift and whatnot a TON. I drive MUCH smoother...
Next time at the track i'll make sure to shift at redline, I was shifting at around 7700 or 7800 I believe, I'm sure bringing it up to 8k will help a lot. I think I was going out of vtec on my 2 shifts that I take
I'm sure my 60' will go down a little as well. Thaks for the help again.....

Well your times puzzle me.

With a 2.38 60 my 99' DX hatch hit a 16.7@78 STOCK and it was my first time at a drag strip.

It now runs 14.22@99 with a 2.4 60' on streets. 13's comming soon after P73 ecu and DR's

With your trap speed higher than 80 you should be much quicker than high 16's with a GSR but I will say this...................learn to powershift and get some DR's for light racing duty.

Cut a 2.0 60 with I/H/E I am sure youll be in the high 14's

I think it was mainly the 2.55 60' that really fucked me up, also, i was shifting rather slow and at lower rpm's because my first run i missed 2nd, and then 3rd gear on the 2nd run. My last 2 runs I was kinda taking it easy. I just need a little time to get used to driving the integra. I am getting MUCH better at it

Just keep practicing...when i got my gsr (first week driving manual-3rd month with a license) i took it down to the track and ran a 16.2 in Hawaii where we have a shitty uphill track with a head wind. Since then my best time has been a 15.5 @ 89.8 with a 2.42 60ft (with a slipping clutch-didnt try with my clutchmaster yet)...my car is a sedan so you should be doin faster than this. Also i would recomend holding your gears as long as u can(8000-8100) as for the b18cs secondaries dont engage till around 6000 and you dont wanna fall out of your powerband. Good luck and keep us posted with ur new times)
btw, i have aem cai, dc4/2/1, tanabe rm, and potenza so3

You should also power shift just ONE time down the track to see if that makes any difference.
I was in the same situation as you. Used to run 16s now run a best of 15.6, stock.
Drop the tire pressure to about 22-24 psi and practice your launch.
