Default lowering a 94 eg

Hey i have a 94 hatch and i wanted to lower it but not really sure how to go about doing it. ive been doing some research and it seems the best way to do it is a complete coilover setup, but i dont have the cash. My friend has teins spring and i was thinking about getting those with my stock struts, so i was wondering if my stock struts will be able to handle the drop without blowing. i wanna lower it so the i can fit 2 fingers between the tire and the fender. also if i cant lower it without stock struts what brand of struts should i get?
