You need to inspect your axles/axle boots.. check the boots for tears, grease slung everywhere, etc..

Inspect your tie rods, ball joints, inner tie rods... check the wheels for play/un-usual movement..

What kind of axles did you put in the car? It is possible your ''new'' axle could still be defective.

I had this exact problem. Thought it was the steering rack and replaced it (huge PITA job) but that wasn't it.

Turned out to be a defective driver side lower ball joint that I had installed about a year prior to that. Got it replaced with a new one of a different brand and it's been fine since.

With the car jacked up grab the wheel 9oclock and 3oclock for tie rod, it shouldn't move at all, any play will let you know whats wrong and 1oclock and 6 o'clock for wheel bearing, again should be solid and have no play. I bet its your axles, just look at the boots and see if there ripped or not and you will probably notice grease all under your car too.

OP said it makes the noise when car is not moving. Definitely NOT the axles. Lower ball joint is the most likely culprit.

yep, my lower ball joint boot had torn, and let in dirt and junk. When I turned the wheel while the car was stopped, it made noticeable popping noises.

I hate ball joints, they all seem to seize up and the bolt always spins with the bolt lol.

Yes you need a press to replace ball joints, and yes you need an alignment afterwards.

I took my spindles off my car and took them to a shop, and had new ball joints and new wheel bearings pressed in for a total of $300 for parts and labor.

If you do that, i would suggest replacing the studs too IMO.

Why? Unless some of the stock lug studs are broken or cross-threaded, there is no need to replace the lug studs.

That was for both spindles.

Jack the car up and put a pry bar between the lower control arm and bottom of the hub assembly (where the lower ball joint is located) and pry up. If there is any free play in the ball joint in terms of up and down movement, it needs replaced.
