Default 1991 Civic hatch swap options

Hey guys, my freind just picked up a 1991 civic hatch for free and we're looking to make it a fun street car. Im really a nissan guy i know all about SR,KA,CA,RB and all that ****, I do own a s2000 though lol. Anyways we can get a 2000 Civic ex with a D16y8 and a 5speed real cheap. would that be a good choice for a motor swap? or am I better off doing a ZC swap? were not looking to make a really fast car, just something fun to drive and reliable. Were not going turbo, maybe just some bolt ons and some spray. what do you guys belive is the best bang for the buck becasue were not looking to spend a ton either. thanks everyone for your help.

if your not looking to spend alot of money on bulding a stronger motor , then dont spray it , it will just cost you in the long run by blowing your engine

just my 2cents
