Default Dumb question but how should I reset my trip meter in my 96 civic ex?

This is my first car ever so I don't know much, I been noticing that every time I start my car the gas meter changed from the last time i drove it and im trying to check if my engine is burning a lot of gas or leaking but I would have to refill it every week when it has 1/4 tank left. I drive on average 30mins a day to school and work. I am planning to reset my trip meter the next time I go refill gas but Im not sure what is the proper way of resetting it because Ive read a lot about ppl using the reset and there speedometer gets messed up. Do i hold it or press it and for how long?, is the car supposed to be on or off when im doing this?

I recently swapped my d16y7 because it was burning oil and smoking with a d16a sohc non vtec. I also wanted to know what rpm should i be driving around for city driving and what i shouldnt go over?

just push the button and release, its purely mechanical, doesn't matter if the car is running, or off, stationary or moving.
