Default How much weaker is a B16 trans compared to a GSR

Hey guys a local guy is letting a pretty mint b16 trans go for cheap and i was thinking about picking it up as a spare tranny. But have always heard that b16s were weaker. And since i do mostly drag racing wasnt sure if it would be worth my time to get or not.

BTW i make about 450-500wheel and run 25" slicks if thats going to be a make it or break it point.

O i would also like to consider putting a spool in it.

Thanks in advance guys.

B16 differentials are smaller and weaker than a GSR, so you would probably destroy it (assuming we are not talking about changing anything) ,

lol. I haven't really paid attention to gear size differences when taking apart the trannys. There are differences in the amount of teeth, but from experience I have only seen people tear the spider gears in the diff's up. LSD ftw.

That probably explained why I broke my differential on the 1st run. I replaced it with a LSD and called it a day.

Damnit you know i thought spools were cheap ive been around the jeep forums for too long. Anyone make a spool in the $200 area for a b16. If not maybe ill just weld the diff on this one LOL.

I wouldn't do a welded diff, cause when I first built my car. My friend welded one up for me and when I was taking the car off the trailer and back it in front the shop, the welds on the diff broke and I had a nice big hole in the tranny case.

on my b16 turbo setup, making 540 on 24.5's running 10's leaving at 8800 with a quaife, no issues. i still have that trans, no 5th for the hand cuff, and a gsr 4th. i did break a 4th gear, but it was a gsr 4th. so far so good.

If you're going to pull the diff out and replace it with an aftermarket unit, you'll be fine. The gear set (gears, bearings, shafts, etc.) strengths between all hydro B-series and 92-93 GSR transmissions are probably the same. The major difference between any of them are the differential size (LS and B16 are smaller than their 1.8L VTEC counterparts).

What benefits have you seen from the b16 4th gear to the gsr 4th gear?

Cool thanks man thats pretty much what i was looking for. And thanks everyone else who jumped in. I know ill be needing some form of diff because theres no way im going to go from a lsd tranny to an open diff and with the weak part being the diff just make sense to replace.

It will work. The Honda/Acura transmission casings are slightly different part numbers based on year and trim level, but they all retain the same dimensions as far as I know. This past spring, I swapped a non-LSD B18C1 diff into a B16A2 transmission. You simply make sure to use the bearings on the B18C diff and just check for the preload (tapered roller bearings) or clearance (closed bearings) to make sure it's fine. Chances are good that it'll be okay and it'll drop right in, but it's good to check just for peace of mind. The tapered bearings have a 79.5mm flat washer shim that you must retain/change, and the closed bearings have an 80mm c-clip shim that you must use. Not sure which bearing will come with the JDM B18C diff. If it's a JDM ITR diff with a higher final drive, the ring gear on the diff will be different. You will need the appropriate 4.4 final drive ring gear to put on the diff. If it's the optional JDM GSR LSD, I think they come with a 4.4 final drive, and it'll go right in.
