Default please help me choose a turbo!

i am building a 81.5mm b16 and need you opinionson what turbo to use. basic setup is

81.5mm b16
JE 9:1 pistons
eagle rods
AFI topmount kit
ITR cams
supertech valvetrain
GSR tranny
Edelbrock IM
91 octane pump

looking for 400-425whp on approx 16-17psi and 500-525whp on approx 23-25psi

this is a daily driver street car, so decent spool is key, gonna be building a 84mm block next (looking for 500-600whp or so) so i would like something that i only have to buy once.

I would go with a BW S256 or S258 personally. The latter of the two is probably the most efficient turbo you're going to find. It can EASILY make 525whp and still has room to make more if you want. It will spool about the same as the GT3076r but has a lot more potential in the higher PR's. Thats my .02

Check this link out...thats just the S256. The S258 can go even further

That's not a bad turbo, but the problem is that it will not only spool slower, but it will also make less power up top. Its cheaper for a reason...

yea.. not a huge difference tho.. might be a little bit of a sacrifice at first, but once he goes his his build 2.0, i'm sure it would perform well within his goals. I just figure that the cost difference would get him closer to the build 2.0 block sooner.

how much of a spool & top end power are we really talkin?

when i was building my fully built gsr 81mm i came up on my friends full race turbo kit. the turbo was a T67. i wanted to keep the T67 but it was too big for my setup. i wanted 350 hp on pump and near or 500hp on race gas. so i traded for a 60-1. it dynoed 350 hp on 10 lbs. its a good turbo for a daily driver although i would rather have a gt30r.

Yeah good advice. not

T3/T67 is where its at man. I had an 81mm B16 17psi was above 400whp, 23psi put me at 507

The gt30 will hold you back when you step up to the 84mm and go for big(er) numbers

35r

thats what id do wither that or a bw 362 i don't think the 258 will be enough later on down the road and if he went with either of the first 2 he would have plent of room to grow
personally id probably go 35r

This is a street setup, so spool > price as per the OP. On the track antilag can fill in the gaps, but on the street you can't really do that when you're rolling (easily ).

Jeff Evans has tons of dynos posted for GT turbo, and they can make mid-500's with the particular GT30 variant he likes. He did a back to back test of the GT35R and a GT30 with a .82ar housing - same power with a tad more boost, but ~600rpm faster spool.

I definately would recommend the BW turbos. I just looked at the maps the other day - the S258 can do about 35psi and still be above 70% efficient, blowing ~60lb/min. The S256 is a little smaller, but still is just as capible for high boost. You will need something more than 91 octane to go above 450whp safely, more like E85.

I agree. I would rather suggest the BW series, but in the end, it's the OP's decision.

T3/67 aka GT37r

I might be biased tho cause thats what I am running, making the power seen under my s/n on pump

to OP: x2 those 2 options alone eliminate the need for any turbo on your list.

with the extra money he will have to spend on upgrading the fuel system it would benefit him to get a little bit bigger of a turbo.
