Default 108,000 mile "stock" GSR motor, steady throttle w/ a slight surge

So my GSR has 108xxx miles... I have had it since 80xxx, I have taken pretty good care of it since I got it. I've never had an issue until the last few weeks. If I'm just cruising with probably 10% of throttle, I get a random surge, most of the time it doesn't even show on the tach but I can barely feel it, if I give it a little gas it "snaps" out of it. I was sitting at a drive thru tonight listening to my motor and I held the throttle at 2k rpm and it surged like 200 rpm, just a little blip. Today I changed my the plugs and wires... It is definately running alot better but I was hoping it would eliminate my little problem. My Haynes says fuel pump, ecu, intake manifold leak, clogged air filter, spark plugs, blah blah. Ecu is original and fine, intake manifold is fine, new-ish air filter, new plugs/wires. So it kind of worries me, I hope its not something major.

If anyone has any input or advice, I'd grately appreciate it!

I know you may have heard this before, but take a look at the IACV, which is located on the back of your intake manifold near the throttle body. It has a plug and also two colant lines that go into it. Sometimes this valve gets dirty, and creates a strange idle issue. Other than that I was thinking maybe a faulty TPS. Any codes thus far?

No codes yet. I'll take a peek at the IACV. Thank you!

you may want to look and your distributor cap and rotor as well. are you running premium gas in that baby. whens the last time you replaced your timing belt if you havent its about due, dont wanna loose another b18c. but yes do check the iacv its located directly behind your intake manifold.

I've taken the intake manifold off a few times in the last year, so new gaskets all the way around. I haven't done the timing belt but the timing cover is off and it looks to be in good shape. Hmm, last time I took the IACV off, I noticed one of the ports didn't have a screen, one did and one didn't. Do they both need the screen? I couldn't remember if it did and I had to get my car on the road to pass emissions so I neglected it.

Ty Weaver.

Kulo, I am pretty sure the timing belt has been changed, it looks in great shape. I'm at 108k. I got it at 80k. Shortly after I got it, I had the compression tested and it was very good. It does need a valve adjustment though.

ding ding sounds like a winner to me. valves out of wack will cause this for sure.

I've been wanting to adjust them for a while, just apprehensive, it seems straight forward, after I read this -> http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/v...alveadjust.php

I'll just wait til I get my beater back and try it. I'll still check the IACV too. Ty.

what are the valve lashing clearnace numbers for GSR?

Factory spec for the B18C1/5 and B16A is:

Intake: 0.006"-0.007"
Exhaust: 0.007"-0.008"

??

uhmmm you answered your own question.

I got my GS-R with 89K on it. Now it has 274K on it and still runs like a champ, and is on its 4th timing belt. If you take good care of it, it will treat you well.

I had a slight idle surge once, I'm talking very small, like from 600-800 rpm. Changing my O2 sensor at about 240K miles helped. I've actually never had my IACV off before, but right now it's idling rock solid at 750 rpm.

since June 2001, bought with only 89K on it. Only the 2nd car I've ever owned/driven since I turned 16 in 1996.

old spark plug wires or plugs are famous for this as well as the above. weak spark generally kills a few hp, drops a few mpg and creates weird idle issues that really aren't "too bad" but you notice.
