Default is it worth it to run a big cam in a stock ported head?

i'm debating on getting some cams for my car over the winter and im not sure which is the best choice. my setup includes: 84.5mm gsr block and head, neukin vvr manifold, t4 gt35r, victor x im, and my head already has supertech springs and skunk2 retainers and a recent valve grind.

the car made 563whp at 26psi with my stock gsr cams and i would like to make around 650whp next year. with stock ports would skunk2 pro1 cams be overkill? should i just go with the tuner1's? i dont care about idle or any of that crap. just want to make more power

crank the boost. Or get a bigger turbo.

i disagree, a bigger turbo and more boost is usually better for a drag car but that won't help in making your power band more usable or making more over all power. I went from gsr to pro1 and my graph completly shifted in my favor.

Sure you can get there any number of ways. But sooner or later you'll learn it's all about balance. The whole package needs to work together.

You have time. Talk with guy's like Joe Simpson or Tony1 listen to what they say. They will help guide you to getting a set up that will perform well and hold together.

Don't be in a big rush to just buy something.

yeah thats kinda why i made this post. i know 650 is probably possible with the 35r on stock gsr cams, but it'll be just about maxed. i figured since guys are seeing huge gains with these all motor cams i would invest in some and not have to turn my boost up as much. i was just wondering what cams would suit me better with a stock ported head. the pro1 or tuner1. i'm all about the pro1 as long as its what you guys recommend also.

I have been wandering the same thing. Im not going for a big power setup, but I was thinking about how well cams would work in my application with a stock head.

Just hearing cars like Joe Simpson's idle, makes me want to get a cam setup like he uses, but Im pretty sure that would be a waste of $$$$ for me at this point.

The Pro1's have worked for quite a few people with that engine size and a decent sized turbo. My tuner has them in his current motor (I'll see if I can find before/after dyno sheets) which was at the time around 450 whp. I'm thinking it added somewhere in the range of the 50-60 whp already mentioned in this thread.

I'm sure there are several options though that'll work quite nicely. Just look at some setups in the FI forum.

we have made 831whp & 520ft/lbs with a set of type r cams on a stock ported head.

Grab yourself a set of ctr cams of change to a little bigger turbo... Or crank the boooost

Amen brotha.... if you dont want to drop money on actually building the head why would you drop top dollar on some camshafts. Get yourself Type R cams from a ITR or CTR we made 762 hp on a CrVtec with ITR cams and a mild head job

The skunk2 tuner series 1 cams seem to be working out really well for Jeff Evans. Browsing their forum you can see several comparisons, and they are making some good power degreed in. Another advantage is no need for a valvetrain upgrade if you dont already have that.
