Icon2 K-Series: What Motor/turbo combo for the most TQ and 500hp?

Hey guys. I am very uneducated about the K Series, but I would like to use it for my tube frame Atom clone, and I would Like to know what the absolutley best motor combination (k20, k24, Cams, IM etc) and best ETT Bullseye would be for an efficient 500whp, with the most Tq. possible, and also what EMS. I pertty much just want to get a list of everything so I can start piecing it together over time to save money, as I still need to get my prelude running. so If you guys could throw some stuff out there that would be great, thanks.

Well i don't know much about k-series stuff. But i think you need to do a lot more research because it seems you have done none. There are many different ways to get high hp and high torque. I would read up on k series builds and build you own oppinion and parts list. It's better to get your own understand than just buying what everyone tells you to buy.

I researched my turbo build for over a year and put a parts list together. Then i asked for everyones opinions, It helped out so much better that i had my own understanding.

IM not an expert or a pro by anymeans but a few things to think about if you want torque are, good cylinder filling at lower rpms, displacement, the right turbocharger, engine geometry. That being said i would start with the largest displacement engine you could work with, that being the k24, not sure which head would suit your torque needs the best but the stock tsx head seems to do ok. THe shodan can chime in about the turbo, hes the man to listen too. Cams wont require anything too "aggressive", vtec k heads flow pretty damn well out of the box. Just some things to think about.

Thanks so much. Think I'll head over to k20a.org.

What fuel grade do you plan to run? That's going to be a limiting factor when choosing a turbo. Also, if you're looking for the most TQ, you're obviously going to want the longest stroke (and most displacement) available. I would suggest a K24 and if you have the bankroll, sleeve and overbore it. IIRC, there was a 2.7L K24/K20 Frankenstein trolling around the NA Forum for a while. If you could manage something like that, you'd have your pick of the larger S300 BW ETT series with minimal lag.

Thank you for your input! Most likley I will run E85. I think I will got with the k20/24 and maybe up the bore a couple mm's, get closer to 2.5-2.6 range. I run the T4 S366 on my H22, and I was thinking just a little smaller than that would be perfect and give me a killer powerband. Initially, I will have to start with it N/A unfortunatley as I don't have the bankroll right now, but I do want to build it so I can run reliably at the track. Does the k24 block have FRM sleeves, or can you use stock sleeves with a forged piston?

I say K24block/K20head build with an S362 with a smaller AR will be awesome for what you're trying to do. Longer stroke will help a lot with the torque, moreso than bore will at least.

I do not believe the Kseries run FRM sleeves.

Also make sure that you have your transmission really overhauled. unlike the B-series, the K series transmissions are not nearly as stout and have a tendency to destroy 2nd gear and 3rd gear syncros over 400whp, depending upon driver. (i'm sure there are several people on here who'll chime in and say that they've done it for a few months or whatever.)

Stick with the K24/K20 Combination and keep yourself on the SIMPLE end, so that if you need replacement parts, you won't run into any serious problems.

I wonder if the transmission problems will still be present in a custom Ariel Atom style chassis?

If its in the transmission, I doubt if chassis type is that relevant.

If you're running E85 on that setup, you could probably even sneak past 500whp with a BW S258, but you're going to be up there in the PRs. It can be done a B series so i doubt you'll have trouble with the larger displacement K. That should yield some insane torque numbers.

Take this test data for example...on an 81mm GSR with an S258, SLS made 550whp/440wtq @ 30psi. You probably wont need to push it that hard to make the power you want though...

If anything, it will help being in that chassis since the weight will be down from a typical street turbo car setup.

My vote goes to a k24/k20a2 frank & a good equal length turbo with a S362 turbo

The k24 may cause massive traction issues paired with a decent turbo. I know that my turbo k20z1 powered turbo RSX I have no traction on street tires until 5th gear and that is with just over 450whp with a peakboost kit and a gt3076 turbo.

this should be scary as **** to drive an atom with 500whp, lol. I wonder how hard this thing will be too control.

What are you going to do about the tranny setup??? Going to run the stock k-series tranny or have a custom one made??? Or even just buy a set of PPG straight cut gears for the stock tranny and it should hold up but it will just be a bit loud but honestly this car is going to be loud regardless, lol

Thanks for all of the info guys. I am deffinatley going to go the K20/24 route and keep it stock till I can afford a build. I didn't know about the tranny issues, that sucks, I guess I will have to do some more research and see whats avalible. As far as controll, fot the track and street I will be running some 315/35/17 Nitto Nt-01's, and on the strip, prolly just use my 24.5x8.5 M&H's that I use on my prelude, But I hope having that 315 tire will give me some decent traction on the street/road course.

If you do want to run a k24 I have a k24 CRV complete motor with only 7k miles on it that we were going to swap into a teg but the guy ran out of money so he is selling it for a little over half of what he paid for it if you want the motor let me know. Its for sale for $900 plus shipping and I can give you more info on it if needed.

The k24 will be great for the lower end torque but you are going to have a much lower rev limit than you would with a k20a2 for example.

^^ But is that the same block that would work with the hybrid?

I'm going to be the black sheep and say S258. If he wants the most torque with 'just' 500whp, that means lots of early boost, not neccessarily PEAK torque. Why would you use a turbo that can do 150-
200hp more? Its not like its going to get you there much easier on pump gas with the bigger snail.

The S256 is still efficient up to 55lb/min with 25psi, and the S258 is still above 70% with 35psi at 60lb/min. Just make sure the turbine is sized properly. Divided will help both spool and power.

Yes, this is the same block that will work without modification to accept the k20a2 head. We had planned to do this down the road after we had the motor up and running but we never were able to get the project underway because his funding was low.

Not really the black sheep at all...that's just the best suggestion IMO

Torque and lightweight are just fine if it isn't fwd. This car will be raced in the strights and turns, so I want the most usable powerband possible, im not looking for peak HP.
