B16 Timing Question and yes I've checked faq.
Hello fellow honda teachers,
Okay I've looked at the faq and the honda man.ual. My question is How do I time my b16. I have all the factory manual info and illustrations. My question is do I line up the white mark on the pulley which is tdc to the timing cover pointer or do I line up the red mark on the pulley with my timing cover pointer. The reason Im asking is because Im running really high idle and when I hook up my timing light Im no where near the red center line on the pulley.
Any and all help will come with a high five
Thanks,
Noidg

first before you set/check the timing your motor needs to be fully warmed up and idleing at 800 rpms, if its not fix that. A jumper needs to plugged into the service/adjusting connector.
Also make sure that you are using the timing light correctly, it took me a bit to figure out mine.
Line up the red mark to get the timing/BTDC. I beleive if you line up with the white mark it should read 0 degrees.

You have the white mark which is all by itself and you have the red mark with a notch on either side. The white is TDC, the red is the desired degree.
If you are using an adjustable timing light, **** or digital reading where you can change the timing, then you will be looking for the white line. Set the timing light to the desired degree. You adjust the distributor advance or retard until the white line lines up with the pointer on the timing cover. If ou then set the light to 0* You should match up with the red mark.
If you are using a basic timing light, then the red mark is your desireable timing mark. Adjust the dist. to match the red mark to the pointer. the marks on either side or the red are +/- 2*.
AS PREVIOUSLY STATED....YOU MUST HAVE THE CAR AT OPERATING TEMP, CORRECT IDLE AND HAVE THE SERVICE CONNECTOR JUMPED TO SET TIMING CORRECTLY!!

Okay thanks for the help. Now to finish my question. When I install my timing belt do I line up my timing to pulley on the red or white mark? And of course with both cam gears pointed up.
