My father has a 2007 accord and, he had this issue where the battery would be drain and it has occurred every winter. The battery is about less then a year old and it is a Honda OEM battery. Is it possible there is a drain somewhere? I know he has the device that rust proofs the car. Could it possible that the Honda OEM battery sucks?

 

Some batteries just go bad, there is no real reason. But being a year old you do know the warranty will pay for it, so go and have it replaced. Problem solved.

 

how often is the car driven? how far on each trip?

 

I was just about to create a post about this. This is my first winter with my 07 Accord LX. I have noticed that the car doesn't start right up after it's been sitting outside for a while in the cold. It almost seems like the type of start if you battery is low. The car is driven daily and I haven't had any battery issues before the cold weather rolled in.
My commute is about 20-25 miles each way.

 

Well since he's retired he rarely takes it for a drive. I would say about 1-2 every week

 

Check the 'rust proofing' device's specs to detemine how much current it draws. If the car is seldom driven and the temps are very low, the battery could end up not having enough cranking amps left because of that 'device'. As for Honda OEM batteries, I have never gotten less than 8 years out of them. Just replaced the one in the CRV that would have been in service 8 years in December. Still worked great, but since it's the wife's car, I didn't want to chance her getting stranded this winter. The longest life I got out of one was 9 1/2 years.

 

I had to buy a new battery for my 06 last month because the original one was completely dead.

 

My 2007 Honda Accord 4 cylinder, which is still under warranty, would not start if not driven in the previous 7-10 days. I would charge the battery and everything was fine unless it was not used for 7-10 days. I checked the specific gravity of the battery cells which ranged from 1.112 to 1.250 after a slow charge. (a healthy battery should be 1.260 - 1.300). I went to my local Honda dealer who checked the battery with an electro mechanical Honda battery tester. The dealer said the battery was ok by Honda standards. He said that Honda would not replace the battery unless their device said it was bad. I have an engineering background and have been involved with auto repairs for over 50 years, and I do not know of any device that can accurately determine the condition of a battery other than measuring the specific gravity with a Hydrometer. Apparently, the battery Honda used in a 2007 Honda Accord 4 cylinder does not supply sufficient cold cranking amps. The static draw on the battery, when the ignition is off is approximately 18 milliamps. If the installed battery was providing sufficient power, the car should start easily after sitting for months. Honda is obviously trying to avoid a costly recall.

 

The Accord service manual states to use a "Bear" battery tester to test the battery and charging system under load (still in the car). I had to replace the oem battery after 4 years. It would still start the engine just fine, but failed the load test. The weakness in the battery was causing communication issues with the MICU, and causing various electrical issues. Autozone had the "bear" tester, and confirmed that the battery was very weak under load.
