Possibly studying in Toronto over the summer... How's theft in/around U of Toronto?
HT,
I'm considering studying "abroad" at the University of Toronto/University of St. Michael's College for the summer of 2009. I would plan on staying with relatives in Scarborough, so I'd be commuting between Scarborough and the University of Toronto... the east side. How are the theft issues with ITRs around there? I would assume I would have to take caution just like in any other major city, but any insight would be appreciated!
If I don't drive between Scarborough/downtown Toronto, is public transportation good enough between Scarborough/downtown Toronto where I wouldn't have to drive?

Is your car going to be parked in a garage in scarborough. Regular car theft is very existent here in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) but I dont know how much security UT has. Insure your car, layer your security, etc.
Depending on where you live in scarborough, you should be able to take the subway or the bus downtown.
Ensure lots of layers of security as always.
Make sure you park inside a garage at night for sure.
I haven't heard of extreme measures of thieves taking a car around here, but I wouldn't let urs be the first...make sure its protected.

If you have a choice, I would not bring your ITR if you are planning to stay in Scarborough. I have not lived in Toronto in a while but that area was known for thefts all the time, especially type r's.
Public transportation is ok as long as you are close to a subway station(RT in scarborough). Taking the bus sucks as you need to get on bus, then RT, then transfer to regular subway. U of T. St Mike's is where I took my under grad. Great school in downtown TO.
If you do bring your car up and need a good shop to get your car serviced let me know.

if you love ur car leave it at home Kansas...type r with US plates is gonna get stolen very very quickly...might be a pain in the *** getting around on the bus and train but at least you will know ur baby is safe.... plus the drive from the east end to downtown T.O wow....you will get introduced to the Hwy 401 and Don Valley parkway parking lots...slow moving and bumper to bumper....im sure some of the guys who live in T.O and advise you on that....

this is the campus on the east end of the University of Toronto... whichever that is.
yeah, from the looks of it, it seems like it's just a bad idea. hopefully public transportation isn't that bad. the R would be left outside, mostly, so that just gives me the creeps.

if the R will be left outside then i definitely advise you to NOT bring it with you. some parts of the scarborough area in the east are ok, but its more or less sketchy. and like itr537 said, driving downtown is a big pain during rush hour. it gets very jammed up, and if there is an accident on the highway then you might as well get out and walk
public transport will get tedious but it is the smarter solution. it can definitely get you to where you need to go.

Don't bring it if that's the case.
Confirmed. Leave it at home. I had one car stolen last year, and have been broken into a few times over the years. Toronto on a whole, is pretty bad. Especially around Yorkdale shopping mall.
listen to these gents, they know what they are talking about!
if you can go to school without the R you will be better off.......trust me!
