Default 04 Accord cuts out at 2800 rpm

I have a 2004 accord with a 115,000 miles on it, and it runs great, until it hits 2800 rpm, then the engine cuts out, until the revs drop to 2500 at which point it kicks back in and runs fine up to 2800, then cuts out. This continues with no end, does not seem to do it cold, according to my wife.
Any thoughs?

is the Check engine light on? Sounds like there is a problem with i-VTEC, You need to check your oil, you likely need the VTEC solenoid or the VTEC pressure switch and the MIL should be on and will have to be cleared

I dont think its the vtec solenoid or the pressure switch cause that will not stop the car from reving up past the 2800 rpms

I think that there is something stuck in the air intake that is causing this problem check your car for leaves and then check the trottle body intake and clean that up. Also let us know if there are any codes or the cel light on.

I think your right mike, if there was an obstruction then the problem would occur at all times. Check you oil level, check for history codes stored on th ECM. (P1259)
Just for giggles take your air filter out and check for possible DOM (decaying organic matter). While your at it pull you intake tube off and inspect your thottle plate and T Body make sure everything is operating (moving freely and not sticking) smoothly.

Thanks for the input. Here's a little more info. I changed the air filter and cleaned the airbox last weekend, with no improvement. After reading your responses I checked the oil and found it a bit low, so I added 3/4 qt. and the problem went away, but returned after driving for twenty minutes. I do have a CEL today, but it had gone out yesterday and the car was driving normally it came on and the problem returned two miles into my 50 mile commute this morning.

Even though your CEL went off, Honda can still pull the code it threw, which is probably related to your problem.

Just as mike had stated earlier, you probobaly have a problem(electrical or mechanical) with your Vtec pressure/spool valve assy. Been ther done it. Ther will be history codes stored in the ECM.

You must not of ever had a problem with VTEC. Uplug just your pressure switch and ill bet you that it wont rev past 2800 rpms

i would def have the code pulled. its sounds like you might need the vtec oil pressure switch i believe the code for it is p2652. theres an s/b or s/n from honda on it. just have the cod pulled and chk your oil level make sure its not low again

Nope.

Just telling him to check the air intake cause mine was clogged once and the engine wouldnt rev past 2500 and took out the leaves that the intake sucked up next to it and problem solved. If I unplug the switch it will rev past 2800 the shaft will not shift over in the engine look up VTEC and you will see what I mean. The more oil pressure during the revolutions the shaft slides over to get more power. Get a vtec controller and have it set to 3000k then you will see the power when the wheels spin from the extra power.

just a quick thought. the car sounds like it is in limp home mode or safe mode because of the check engine light turning on and never getiing fixed. if the CEL has anything to do with oil pressure or the VTEC the car might be in safe mode because it may not know that is has high enough oil pressure on all parts of the motor. Just a recommendation to take it is and get the car fixed for the code first and see if the car still acts up after that.

Thanks, to all who replied!

My car is running fine, with no CEL, or any other problems. Those who put me on to the VTEC seolenoid were spot on I think. I had been driving the car for about a month trying to acheive maximum MPG (44MPG max), and I was short shifting at or below 2,000 RPM, and the problem occured the first time my wife took it and tried to rev beyond 2,800 RPM. I'm not sure if the solenoid was stuck or just sludged up, but I changed the oil twice last week and my problems dissappeared. I suppose it could have been a sludged up oil filter as well, causing low oil pressure, but it seems to have resolved itself.

Thanks to all!

By the way, my other honda is an 08 SI sedan
