The VX has longer gears AND a longer final drive than a Y7. So performance wise, the Y7 is better. But the 92-95 Si tranny is the best d-series tranny. The 92-00 EX tranny is the same thing with a slightly longer 5th gear to net you better gas mileage, plus they're much easier to come by.

If you're going for gas mileage -- VX

If you're going for speed -- EX/Si

That post made my head hurt. the '92 - '95 CX/VX trannys are geared long as hell, they have the highest theoretical top speed of any D-series tranny, the problem is that a D16Y7 just doesn't have the power to get anywhere near 185MPH. Go with the Y7 tranny if thats all thats available to you, otherwise get an Si tranny.

For all motor try to find an EX/Si tranny and consider a 4.7FD. They make a 4.9 too, but it's really wild, for more mild there's a 4.5. If I bought one it would be the 4.7.

There's a gear calculator here: http://fatboyraceworks.com/gears/

You can use that to compare how they are geared.

Ok, D series trannys are cheap and easy to come by. I've seen a couple for under $50 local, and JDM ones for $150-250 on eBay. Theres no need to settle for crap gearing unless you're just using whatever is lying around.
