Default Compressing slave cylinder? Plus other slave questions...

Ok, I went to hook my slave cylinder back up and its extended too far to bolt. I was truing to compress it by hand and it almost felt like something had broken. But I'm not sure whether or not that was just in my head. Either way, I didnt get it compressed. In the process, I accidentally pulled the boot away from the metal base and leaked some brake fluid out. Besides losing fluid, did I do anything to the slave cylinder by doing this? Also, how can I compress it so that I can bolt it back up?

You can only really hurt the slave if you push the clutch pedal down when the slave is not installed: the piston will push out too far and it will be toast. Open the bleeder and try again. It still is going to be a pain. When you get it installed and bled if it leaks fluid then you need another one.

Looks like a little 8mm hexed nipple and should have a rubber cap.
