Default K&N Breathers for valve covers -- good idea or bad?

How many of you are running those valve cover breathers and bypassing the line that is susposed to run from the valve cover to the intake piping?

Just wondering if there is any proof, either way, of a HP gain or loss with them on. It will keep the TB and intake cleaner, but will it add HP?

I would take 1/4 HP *plus* a cleaner intake manifold any day of the week.

I think they are a waste of money . Some people do run those ,but most the mechanics I know dont recomend them.

If you want a cleaner intake, get/make an oil catch can....don't use those breathers, the line is needed so that harmful vapors will get sucked out of your motor...there have been posts about this before.

The PCV system was designed for a reason.

it will keep the TB and intake cleaner, but over time, your engine bay wont be so clean...i would get an oil catch can...too bad they are ten times the amount of the filter

Well, I lost my link...but its pretty simple. They used like a 1qt. paint container, and epoxied two 3/8" nylon barbs on the top and fill the container with steel wool and it apparently works pretty well.

Place the barbs like on this catchcan (pic from c-speedracing.com, they filled this catchcan with steel wool):
