Alright so i'm a complete idiot when it comes to anything bigger than a 4-stroke 50cc moped and now I have a VERY BEAT-DOWN 1989 accord i'm trying to repair one problem at a time.

When the engine runs, water drips out of the muffler, which I'm told is completely normal. My concern is that this is not the stock muffler, and seems to have a lot of depth to it. I believe that my muffler is so filled with water, it actually causes a very low-pitched wine/hum as the air flows over the water in the muffler. No its not a serious engine problem but its a very annoying sound which i would like to get rid of. Would it be a good idea to drill a small hole in the bottom of the muffler to drain the water? and if it is, is one location better than another (front, back, middle)?

 

Most OEM & OEM replacement mufflers have a small weep hole in them for water to drain. So if yours does not have one you should probably add one. Put it as close to the end of the exhaust system/muffler as possible. Most of the holes are found on the bottom of the muffler approx 1/4" before the end cap bevel.

 

A little more specific, the lowest point of the muffler, the point closest to the ground.

 

Now that the weather has cooled here in the northeast, you're going to see all manner of steam / water / condensation coming from both the exhaust pipe and the Muffler peep hole.
The hole is supposed to be there; and yes, it's supposed to be on the bottom.
Depending on the tilt, the hole could be either on the rear lower, or the front lower of the muffler can. (lowest point)
This condition occures in all exhaust systems when cold - the water is a by-product of combustion - and it condenses on the inside of the exhaust until the system reaches operating temp. At which time it boils off.
Any that were to collect in the muffler would drain until the muffler too heated up.
