I'm building (or more correctly having built) a car I may never be "technically/legally" able to drive on the street in Virginia (where I live),
and it's beginning to **** me off!

In a way I'm not surprised.
Somewhat par for the course, as they say.

Maybe its a good thing.
I'll yank the A/C and put in a full cage, etc...

Maybe I'll feel differently tomorrow morning. Ed

Ed...that's why you have two other cars...anything's legal, as long as you don't get caught.

I say register it in another state - where they are a little more lenient towards those things.....

this is like importing an RSX-R.

just get a base-model RSX and get that registered.....the officer wouldn't check vins, and the registration would say "RSX..." >>>> ofcourse VA is probably one of the worst/hardest places to own a car.

 

Zyg, I think you should move out here to Pittsburgh!!! You would be closer to your parents at least. (Then you would never have an excuse not to visit mom). Hehe...

 

Um CA will take that title any day. Ever here of a smog Ref? Yeah if a cop pulls you over and thinks you car isn't smog legal (even if its a stock Town and Country car (lol) or a freaking Caravan, etc... the cop can give you a ticket which says you cannot drive your car on public roads till you take the car to a CA official smog Ref station which will then test you cars emissions under load (IE: a dyno type machine) and fully check every aspect of your car. You then have to pay for this smog Ref check which is around $110, then if you pass you are allowed to keep driving yet you still loose the $110 smog Ref check, plus you have to pay the filing and admin fee's to the DMV which adds up to $95. Total is around $220 even if your car is smog legal. Oh yeah this CA smog Ref check cannot be used towards updating you annual 2yr smog check. Also if you don't pass, the smog Ref. will go into the DMV database and revoke your cars registration and you have pay FAT fines. However if you don't pass with a stock car and in order to make it pass adds up to over $500-800, the dmv MAY give you a pass on the car for 2yrs. Yet if you have mods (of they think you have mods) which make it not pass then you will pay BIG fines and still have your registration revoked.
Trust me I know all about this. Had to do it with my R. Major PITA.
I know a friend who got pulled over in his stock truck because a cop thought it was too loud. He went to the smog Ref and passed yet still had to pay the $220+ as I did. TOTAL BS. Kinda sad especally when the smog Ref. people tell you that cops do this all the time since its loophole in giving the local county more money, etc... This little BS thing is only a tip of the iceberg.

CA ownes when it comes to fu@ked up auto laws, etc... FL however gets a close second for that BS new law regarding racing, etc...

Thats what all the 10 second Turbo hatches have in NY.

 

How does one go about obtaining such plates? (aside from actually BEING a dealer)

Find a county just south of the border (NC) that only does safety inspection (ie do your lights work?). Only 8-10 counties out of 100 in NC require emissions

No real need to dyno in the present configuration, but I'd like to drop by at least and say hello.
