if its a d series you have a very good chance of everything being fine. same thing just happened to me. new timing belt and good as new.

do a search in the archives and you will get the same general answer as i just gave you.
after i searched the topic it made me decide to throw a new belt on.

its a good idea to replace the water pump while your in there, as well as the tensioner.

Not to be the bad news guy, but all 16 valves and four scored pistons. High interference engines...

I had a similar incident a few years back and decided to buy a low mileage replacement.

That is the absolute worst possibility chances are since he wasn't ripping on it every thing is fine.

how long did you run after it snapped there is a good chance you bent valves, or crack the sleeves possible piston damage cause valves

usually on the d series they say as long as your under 2000 rpms ur pretty much ok i was on the interstate when mine snapped on my old z6 before i went b series and it snapped at like 5 k on a si trans bent about 5 valves it ran enough to get it home sence i put the timing belt on the side of the interstate but after that it was down hill from there

doesn't really matter too much at what rpm the belt breaks at. it has everything to do with what the valve positions are when it snaps. preferably it would be while all 4 pistons are as close to level with eachother as possible in the block. if either 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 pistons are at the bottom of there intake stroke when it snaps then inevitably 2 of the cylinders will have 2 of their valves in there most protruded position into the combustion chamber. which would be the worst case scenario because then as the motor winds down the pistons come back up a few times and uppercut the **** out of your valves. If you are lucky and it broke in the right spot then you will be fine. unfortunately it is quite likely you have some minor or potentially major valve/head damage.

just set the crank to tdc using the marks that are located on it, and set the cam timing using the two marks on the head. throw a belt back on it and hope for the best.

most likely u bent some valves, depending on what engine its cheaper to buy a new one than to rebuild

when my belt broke, as above stated, i tried to crank like 3-4 times. still no problems. this was on the standard 1.5l, on the 1.6l with the bigger cam there may be more of an issue with bent valves.

restarting the car isnt going to do much damage on a d series. I broke my belt at a light tried to restart it 7 times since i had an ignition problem before i heard the "whur" and realized it was my timming belt.

This was hmmmmm 60k miles ago car runs as strong as ever.

You have a 50/50 chance regarding any damage. Line everything back up, install a new belt and do a leakdown/compression test.

80 percent chance you got bent valves... .. but i've seen acouple of times where they just replace the t belt and just just start driving it again... and the valves eventually just formed straight again... if its a beater engine just do the t belt... other wise swap.. hahah they ususally replace and run at high rpms for awhile for the first 5 minutes or so... like 5k... good luck though

just slam on the t belt and start the damn thing, leak/down compression test. im gonna say u have a better change in that d series running again than when my tbelt snapped on my h22a bent 11 valves

i had a B18B swap in my EK, driving on the golden gate bridge. belt snaps and i lost all power. had to be pushed across.

reason: also found out my water pump was just pumping fluid all over the highway. this meant my engine was so hot, it melted teeth off my belt somehow. i drive hard, but i did not think that hard.

explanation: after having it towed to honda, just for a diagnosis before i didnt know what happened, they said min 1500$ in costs to find out what happened. "depend on how fast, probably bent 3 or more valves and equally likely issues with the piston and crank..."

question: is this really possible? and would it be cheeper to buy a bottom end, and switch the head over? anyone have this same problem?

Put a new t belt on, start it up listen for clicks, clacks, anything of that sort, if you hear somthing take off head and install new vavles. If you dont then your good to go.

i took the engine out already and bought a new engine, because i could not deal with the issues at the time. long story. but after replacing the belt, you think it would turn over and maybe even start up?

My bros DX just snapped, I did the water pump and belt and he was good to go. One of those things, it could bend them but theres a chance they won't too.

agreed.. was about to say the same thing also.. slap on a tbelt, check compression. and then decide if its worth RnR valves or just getting a junkyard engine.. or do what i did and decide it was time for a b series upgrade

Ok, put a new timing belt on... If it starts up and runs then congrats. If not just buy another d series... It's only like $400 for a whole engine. Very inexpensive... I mean you have a 50/50 chance of engine starting up. Doesn't matter what engine it is B, D, H, THERE INTERFERENCE ENGINES.
