Default Balancer shaft seal Q..

I heard there is a problem with balancer shaft seal on 97-01 Lude. The mechanic who did my timing belt told me that he had at least 10 cases of Accords and Preludes loosing a lot of oil because that Seal came out from the block. He told me that there is repair kit to fix that problem. Any of you guys had any exp. with that??

Yes there is a seal retainer kit ....I got mine from hondapartsdeals.com for like $4 or something.....its just a metal bracket that holds the seal in and it utilizes one of the timing cover bolts to secure it......

its a 40min job according to the honda bulletin. Remove the crank pulley, partially remove the bottom timing cover slip in the retaining clip and bolt down.

Mine failed 3 weeks ago. Seal popped out and painted lines of oil on the drive as I reversed out. Spotted it and killed the engine. Had seal replaced and new timing/balancer belts. Lots of oil squirts out the timing cover, very very quickly. I was lucky, car was running for only 30secs or so, and I know the oil level was full as I checked it that morning.

Hey Tim S
This Bulletin shows only 94-95 Lude but what about later models?

Still applies. I've installed one of these and the little instruction sheet that it comes with is essentially the same as the one already linked.

Here is a pic I found on the net and I've hosted it on my web site for you to see the actual retainer fitted.

same thing happened to me recently. seal popped out and i barely made it home with what extra oil i had in the trunk. and i expected the worst. it was a week before i had a chance to look at it. turns out it was the seal. so i called mgags7 and he informed me about the retainer...
replaced the seal.
installed the retainer.
good to go!
