Default 97 ek dx w/ d16y8 motor smog?

I have a 97 civic dx w/ a d16y8 motor. Can i pass smog w/out going to stae ref cause i live in california, sacto. Or i have to go state ref first in order to pass smog.

from what i remember, as long as you have an engine from yur year model (ex. a 97 EX d16y8) or higher then you should be fine...but alot of people that smog our cars dont even care or know the difference as long as it looks stock...i got a 98 ex and have a 96 y8 motor and passed inspection easily
