Click on the person of interest's screen name and it will take you to his (or her's) profile page. At that point you will have choices to either IM, EMail etc.

Yes IM (instant message) = PM.
I'm not so sure that a noob can IM people. I know that they can receive IMs but I don't think they can send them until there trial period is over?????? Check the Forum Rules. I think there is some info in there.
Or if you are able to IM then you could just click on the little IM cloud icon under the users name & avatar
