the non-vtec 4th gen prelude h-series was the h23a tranny. and no it does not matter which h-series tranny (and I think most if not all F-series transmissions will bolt up as well), with the exception of the 5th gen prelude TypeSH.

4th Gen Prelude, yep.
You could always take it to a tranny pro to fix. I was quoted $500 to fix my Accord's tranny for bad synchros in third and fifth. It's not going to happen, though.

You dont need a new tranny to fix it. Most F and H series trannies grind into 5th. I keep mine from grinding by letting the RPMs drop with the clutch in before i shift into 5th, works everytime.
There is a service bulletin about it. I have no idea how much it would be to fix though. But it is a known problem. The 5th gear has a design flaw.

why buy a new tranny, when the same problem will probably happen again. lude and accord trannies are notorious for bad 5th and 3rd gear synchros. just pull the tranny, and have it rebuilt, so you will know exactly what was done to it, so the problem does not reoccur. this is scrubachu btw, at a friends house
yes...if you let the motor speed and tranny speed sych...you don't need synchros. I can shift my car through its gears w/o grinding w/o using my clutch. The big joke is to drive your car with your left foot propped up on the door sill and shift while driving down the street...haha...that always amazes the chicks...haha
Before you waste all the time and money, try running some REDLINE MTL in the trans.... I had BAD probs with the sync's in my D16 tranny and the MTL made them all go away!!! It was amazing..
