Default low oil with no visible leaks?

I'll keep this brief... Followed a friend in his car outta town last night, and we checked his oil before we left town. The oil level was inexplicably low on the dipstick, so we added 3 quarts, drive it around the block, check it again and it looks good so we go on our merry way. Then, a few hours and about 80 miles worth of driving later we get back to town. When we got back, we checked his oil again to be on the safe side.... Sure enough, it was really low again. To clarify, by low I mean that it was at the first hole on the dipstick.

The only thing I can think of would be the cold weather (got down to the 40s). The engine is a B18CR with 90k miles on it, using 10w-30 mobil 1 fully synthetic oil. Any suggestions/ideas? I'm gonna check over it again for leaks on my lunch break...

*Would also like to add that there in no blue smoke coming from the car. The car also has a VTEC problem... At ~6k RPMs it'll bog down a lil bit and throw a cel, with dark smoke coming from the exhaust and bits of carbon showing up on the rear bumper. According to what I've read, low oil pressure can cause issues with VTEC so I'm wondering if the two issues are related...

Either burning oil or going into coolant. Check coolant.

I'll do that. I'm stumped, though... Even if it is getting into the coolant, I don't think that 3 quarts of oil would just disappear after only 80 miles on hard driving...
