Crazy project shaping up for next year, need input
Hey guys, I'm an old member and haven't been on here in years, but I may have a new honda project on the horizon, and I'm looking to he great H-T brain trust for wisdom
I love the 84-87 CRX, and I have been looking at them for the start of an MR project. The plan is to replace the rear beam axle with a DeDion setup and drop a D series mill in the back. It's a pretty stoneage approach to handling, but it should keep 125hp in check just fine.
Here's what I'm having a hard time figuring out. The CRX is obviously pretty tiny. I can't figure out if I have enough space to put a D16 in the back, cover it with an insulated box, and still put the seats where they shoud be. I'm 6'2" so I can't move the seat up much. And I refuse to spend a year building a car that I don't fit into. Me and my partners in crime are split in our opinions of whether we have enough room.
So what do you guys think? You've probably spent more time looking at CRX rear compartments and D16s than I have, so educated guess?

there is really only one way to find out for sure but i think if you can put the motor low enough you should be ok you will have to put the fuel tank up front
I'm of the opinion that low in the chassis with some racing seats will be a tight fit, but it will fit. And moving the fuel tank would be the least of our worries
I guess if it doesn't work, I could rip out the subframe we build and stick it in a hatchy, but the rex body would probably have a ton of cleanup and prep work in it by that point

already been done in 1985 with an acura v6.
search redpepperracing.com for C25ahatch. he just dropped in a 3.2 with a 6 speed. it's a hatch. you shouldn't have a problem.
also, road and track had a twin engine crx.

^^^Thanks for that!!! Very interesting to look at that car. Kind of like a Honda SHOgun, lol. I was worried, because to look at the rex, the rear axle is tucked in pretty close to the passenger compartment. Nevertheless, if that big *** C25A fits in the hatch body, the CRX should swallow a little bitty D16.
I don't think I'll need to tube the back to do this. The rear suspension will still be a solid beam. A dedion is a form of tube axle that mounts the differential to the car and uses CV joints to power the wheels. For a low power application with limited travel, the stock trailng arms can probably be retained, along with the stock coilover positions. Everything else will be custom, but the chassis pickups will be the same, except for the panhard which will have to be moved.
I like the D because it's cheap, and we're going to try and keep it light enough that 125hp or so is enough to get into trouble. If this works it should be the ultimate momentum car, so if you can't go fast with a D16 you shouldn't be behind the wheel anyway.
Thanks guys, I think I got what I needed. You'll know if it happens if I come back next year with a build thread. I'm planning during the rain season, and dragging some hulks home in March when the weather gets nice again.

twin engined crx's have been done when they were new
ebay link to crx book
search out this book (link is for reference, i'm sure you should be able to find it where you are cheaper) as there are write ups of two twin engined rexes

If you're looking for some ideas, a guy over at 3geez is doing an H22 in the back of his Accord hatch. Lots of good pics of how he did it. Used a subframe from a 4g Accord and put it in the back of his car...
