Default Advice for a Beginner

I have a 2001 NBP GS-R , and im real particular about keeping it up to date , nice and shiny... I probably have a small case of Clean Car OCD lol ... anyways , I have been wanting to learn how to detail my car professionally , without having to go to an actual detailer. I am a beginner so i dont want to go with a rotary buffer and end up burning my clear coat like an idiot. I was thinking about getting this kit off of autogeek.net
http://autogeek.net/menzerna-p....html

When I have some time , Ill take some pics of my car in the sun and show the swirl marks and what not.

Also , what do you guys use to remove Hardwater stains on the Windows/Side View mirrors, everytime I use my wiper blades and see the stains, It just makes me boil inside lol... Thanx for your time and advice

for the window calcium deposits and such, Griots Garage glass polish. Not Fine glass polish, but their more abrasive one. It works great, and no, it doesnt scratch anything. I removed a ton of junk from my windows and couldnt believe how much better my car looked just with sparkly clean windows.

Hey i am a professional buffer .. ive been buffin for 3 years now. if u have a black car u would want to do a 3 step proceess as in step one is a alpha grit.. kinda feels like sand paper buff with the whole car with that..step 2 is a kinda of wax called alpha wax change the buffin pad to another one like a foam pad.. so buff the car with the foam pad with the alpha wax (use microfiber towels) when all the wax is off so u can see if u missed a spot or not..step 3 is regular wax called air plane wax (ya sounds kinda goofy) but it werks trust me.. so instant message me on here or comment back in the thread lemme no how u do.. Good luck!

did you really just tell him to sand it, "buff" it with wax, and then use airplane wax over that? wow.

lol .. thanks for the advice ... but i would of never even considered that , im pretty sure some compounding/polishing with a finishing sealant would work 10x better and 100x less probable to damage my paint.

OP, that kit is a fine choice! I think you will be able to tackle this thing without any issue.

HOWEVER...

i think i can assemble a better kit for around the same amount!

i'd get this kit - http://autogeek.net/porter-cable-pad-kit.html
then i'd get optimum compound, optimum polish, optimum poli-seal, optimum opti-seal, the supreme 530 MF towel 3-pack and one cobra jr MF towel. that will put you right at about $275. obviously the polisher is what you are paying for there, but it comes with the backing plate and several different 5.5" pads, a great assortment and a nice intermediate size. you might be able to substitute the polish for this - http://autogeek.net/optimum-in....html since the poli-seal will aptly will the role of polish if you use an orange pad. it will be able to refine the compounded surface and having a nice instant detailer is a wonderful thing.

I am a sealant ***** i have fmj goes on like butter love this on warmer colored paint, opti looks amazing on white and silver paint, wet diamond for sure on black paint, poorboys ex-p is pretty good on most colors.

some people do some people don't but i always add a layer or two of wax on top of a sealant as the sealant adds the wet looks and the wax adds the depth and warmth which i use Dodo Juice hard candy commonly

yeah there is alot of talk abou dodo juice on autogeek now since they started carrying it. i just can't get wrapped up in the billions of products and massive collection of various stuff, but im glad it's an option for others.

theres so many LSP's out there, it all comes down to personal preference really. thats why I dont even bother suggesting LSP's really.

What the hell did you just say?

Gonna go ahead and throw my hat in the ring on this one as well. First and foremost don't listen to this guy.

Secondly you seem to be on the right track with the idea of a Porter Cable 7424. It is quite easy to use and extremely difficult to do any damage with. Double up on your preparation by visiting Autopia.org, this site is like the honda-tech of detailing. There you can find DIYs, step by step instructions, descriptions of detailing products and acronyms, and general knowledge. And just like HT, Search is your friend.

Just about anything E-Rok says I agree with, (I am a professional detailer as well), I also happen to own an SBP (Starlight Black Pearl) GSR as well, and am well acquainted with many techniques and tricks for honda paint so if you have any questions regarding your specific car feel free to PM me.

Remember with detailing, perfection is that thing which is always just out of reach.

Thats good to know , im really excited about getting this kit and getting my learn on! Im someone who does lots of research and takes pride in their work , I work at Tire Kingdom and have learned so much when it comes to Mounting/Balancing tires and general maintenance of cars. I have built my own client base just because customers love the work I do and see that I take my time and do things right the first time ... you wouldnt believe some of the **** other technicians pull and Im grateful to of had the oppurtunity to learn it myself and be able to use this information to my advantage in the future ... Ill def keep in touch . I just have to wait on this other guy to come up with the cash and go half and half with me , spending $300.00 around christmas time is just out of my budget.

T.J. as you might know, I have also been getting into detailing cars, and have become quite proficient by hand. I am ready to step it up to that next level and have looked at that same kit. Hopefully these guys on here can give us an answer, since they know a great deal about it and do a great job on the cars I have seen them do!

that kits a great way to start with, also how are you going to wash the car i personally use the two bucket w/grit guards and a foam gun to start the process. (i would get more mf towels though) as you start to detail your product lineup will get much bigger all depends what you want to do and how in depth you want to get

are you worried about the rims and tires? i use ps1s gel to clean them and then coat the rims with poorboy's high temp wax , the tires i use 303 Aerospace Protectant and wipe off excess.

trim and molding i do a 50/50 water/isopropyl alcohol wipe down then use black wow to bring that nice clean matte black back to life again wipe off excess with a mf towel

ps: i have about 150 mf towels btw and i clean them and the polishing/finishing pads with lc's Snappy Clean Pad Cleaner

are you doing interior too? some of the stuff i use, poorboys-Natural Look, 7:1 water/woolite mix,303 cleaner,Rejuvenator Oil,among many other things this is a whole different thread though

Brent

good luck man its addicting
