Default Does anyone know if the 96-98 sohc engine is an iterference head?

I am pretty sure it isn't because Ive broken a timing belt before on mine and it didn't bend or break anything but I have a friend that just broke hers and before she spends a lot of money to replace it I want to be 100% sure that it isn't interference.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's definitely an interference engine.

Definitely interference. Something like 95% of Honda engines are interference.

This is why it's always stressed to replace the timing belt if it's time or if you don't know if it's been replaced.

Ok thanks then. I guess I just got lucky as hell with my old crappy single cam. I've always neglected D motors because they don't cost to much but my B series motors always have been well taken care of. Haha I ran my D into the ground just to come up with a reason to buy a b16 swap.

Thanks for all the help I guess I will tell her to have it taken apart and see if she bent anything.

The D15 may not be. My brother in law's 95 D15 non-VTEC snapped the timing belt and didn't bend any of the valves. There's not many motors that are non-interference.

i think they are, i had a b7 that snapped a belt once, and bent valves. But then again, b7 pistons are flat and z6 pistons are dished

AFAIK all Honda motors are 'interference' motors!

Gates says all '95 D15s (CX, DX, LX, VX) are 'interference' motors... Your brother-in-law just got lucky!

If anybody wants to check their motor: http://www.gates.com/part_loca...=3598

Wow, he got super lucky then. Are the Honda engines firing orders 1 and 4 together, then 2 and 3 together? If so, I guess you have a better chance of not smashing the valves. Also, I guess it depends on how big of a lift and duration the stock cam has. If it's pretty small, you've got an even better chance then.

Default FV-QR

Just because there have been X type of engines in the past which have snapped timing belts and been fine doesn't mean they're not interference.

I believe all D-series engines are interference.
