Default cools off at idle

Alright, so i got a problem here. My car takes forever to heat up, about 15 minutes when driving and im not even sure about when its idleing. Also whenever I'm at a red light the heat starts getting colder, and if I sit long enough my temperature gauge will start dropping. I've replaced the thermostat twice now and don't know where else to start looking.

Are the fans functioning properly?

Well, I see you're from Minnesota. Much like me, from North Dakota.

It's cold out. Your engine generates more heat as it drives than as it idles. The cold air around her cools off the engine a lot faster than most people expect.

How much does it drop? And what is the average temp on the gauge before it drops?

the fans seem to be working just fine, they usually aren't on at idle unless they need to be.

and the temperature will drop all the way down to the c if I wait long enough. Its at normal operating temperature before it drops. Also if I let it run in the driveway for 10 to 15 minutes the needle will barely more up.

Sounds like my cars right now... Is your heat on? Does the heat even blow HOT air, or is it warm air?

Your thermostat is stuck open.

Unfortunately some thermostats are already bad out of the box... take yours out and see if it opens... put it in a pot of water on the stove and boil it, see if it opens, if it doesn't move... it either stuck shut or open...

And since the car won't heat up... that most likely means it's stuck open...

I have, then both of them must have been stuck open, but I'm not believing it yet.

I just let my car warm up, and it will warm up without the heat on just fine (usually had the heat on when it was warming up), but as soon as the heat gets turned on it starts cooling off.

are your fans constantly running? you could try the redneck trick and block your radiator with some cardboard.lol

nope, fans are just fine, I'm gonna try a flush and see if that helps, then I'm gonna try the cardboard trick.

Make sure if you do the cardboard trick to cut holes out of it where your fans would be so that they don't burn out.

I'm still betting your thermostat is the problem. I promise you it's stuck open...

yeah, I'm gonna try this flush and if it still doesn't work I'll try a new thermostat, or I may just replace it when I do the flush.

Have you been using Bar's Leak or anything like that?

When you do the flush, take your radiator hoses off and grab your garden hose... run water directly through the head until it runs clear, through your heater core until it runs clear, and through your radiator until it runs clear...

I've flushed many, many, many times... and I've come to realize that this system is very effective

I haven't used Bar's leak or anything, I haven't flushed it since I've had the car, only drain and fils.

I was just gonna buy one of those t fittings that go into the lines and you just hook up a garden hose to it and do it that way.

I wouldn't waste my money on one of those (I already have wasted my money on one of those.) haha

It's really easy to take the hoses off, and a lot more effective to do a "direct" flush rather than those T-fittings. Overall it takes maybe half an hour to get the hoses off, flush it out, and reconnect everything...
