Default clutch chatter?

Ok, am I about to spend more damn $$$$!!!!!! Today, I noticed when I start out in first gear, the car shutters a little..RPM's are up, so I know it's not that..The clutch has 86,000K on it with the original clutch. I just got a new master cylinder and fluid flush. Do you guys think I'm in the need for a new clutch or throw out bearing..I sure as hell hope not...Ideas???

thanks

your clutch might be going out...

clutch chatter is when you have a grabby clutch and it's in between engaguged and disengagued and it starts to make noise and the car feels like it's gonna fall apart when your pulling out...

I have it some now with my 6puck unsprung..

If yiou have that many miles on it and when you watch the rpm's as you nail the gas in say second gear.. does the rpm's shoot up and you feel like you should be going faster?

not talking about mad "vtec YO"... but slipping...??

drop the cash and get one that will support the mods you plan on having in the next year... that way you wont have to replace it again for a while.

you probably have metal to metal contact with the clutch and pressure plate...

get it replaced soon before you damage your flywheel and ahve to get another one.

Yeah. Go ahead and prepare for a clutch replacement soon.

I had 73000 miles on mine when I replaced it. For 3000 miles prior to that, it would chatter uncurably on cold drives. No matter how much I slipped the clutch, it always wanted to chatter. It never slipped while in gear tho.

After pulling out the clutch, the rivets were only another 1/16" away.

Well now I have another problem...It started the same time the clutch chatter started. When I shift at high RPM to like 3rd or 4th gear, it's hard to go in...Also when I try to downshift at hight RPM, it's hard to get in gear. Are these problems related, or are they different. Would a trans flush fix this issue?

I had pretty much the exact same progress of problems recently, and it turned out to be a broke-*** clutch spring retainer (I 'underlined' it in red at the bottom):

Do you hear anything that sounds like metal-on-metal grinding? Even just occasionally? That little bugger was jumping around all over the place, and sometimes got positioned just right to make some really horrible sounds...

No, I don't hear any metal on metal.. If the RPM's are low, all shifting is smooth. If I pull up the RPM's starting in first, I don't get the chatter. I guess the only way to find out is to take out the clutch..If your going to do that, you might as well replace it.

The metal sounds for me actualy developed about 2-3 weeks into it...yes it took me a while to do anything about it ...but otherwise same exact symptoms. Good luck!

[edit] Me fail English? That unpossible!

Mr. Brite, I think I might as well just replace it..with 86K in it, it's going to really go soon, the way I drive. haha. I think I'm going to get ACT Heavy Duty clutch, with the SS pressure plate..It's just going to be hard driven daily driver..Is this a good steup?I have all the I/H/E, and Stage2 cams, VAFC, and getting the Skunk2 chip. What about a new flywheel with this setup. What do you recommend?

Thanks

I agree with everyone that the clutch is the problem but you may also want to check your engine mounts. I had a friend who installed a new Clutch Master kit and it started chattering. When he called them for some help they suggested looking at the engine mounts, so he did and found they were torn. So he got new ones and the problem went away.

I need to examine my old disk more closely. I heard the metal sound. I replaced the clutch, and it was gone. When I looked at the disk I could not see the problem. I expected springs to fall out, but nothing. A few small sections of the material were missing at the edges of the segments.
