Default new to the forum ::: what car to buy

i was the very happy owner of an 89 crx si but it was in a bad accident and i am selling it for around 1750. not i was to buy a 92-95 civic hatch. i have a few quiestions though. first which model should i buy. i like the thought of having the si for the extra features but i imagine it weighs more an i will eventually drop in a b16 or maybe a b18 further down the road. i hear the cx and vx are good models for hybrids but i dont know about the power of the stock motor since i will still have to drive it for a while til i can afford the swap. so i was wondering how much i should generally pay for each model. also how difficult is a swap of those motors into each car.

thnx in advance.

CX and VX if ya worry about weight. Wish I got a Si. I wanted power features and a moonroof.

There's 92-95 hatches going from $1500-$19,000 on http://www.autotrader.com right now.

VX and Si are wired for VTEC already, 92 models are prewired in CX and DX. But it's not hard to hook up VTEC for your swap. Two wires.

I used to have a DX with a stock motor, when you reduce the weight a bit, it moves good enough for temporary (102 hp). but you will weigh more than a CX/VX, around 70 lbs. Most of this can be removed down the road...but the gas tank cannot (easily anyway)...the tank is a few gallons bigger. But things like passenger air bags, side moldings, p/s, a/c (if they have them) can all be removed easily (well, kind of....).

Just decide how hard core you are, or want to be and go from there. Do some serious thinking though, because you don't want to buy a SI and regret it (you can always buy a CX and ADD the extra features down the road).

yea i am thinking hard about a nice VX. i dont need A/C and i dont have P/S in my crx now so that wont bother me. is it true though that the cx and vx dont have tachs on them. or do they have a tach and speedo.

CX does not have a tach, 100% sure on that.
VX, not sure on that one.

either way, just buy a SI or EX tach for cheap enough (that is what my car has, works great!).

My VX has a tach. Assuming its not an option i would bet any VX you look at will have one. Also mine had A/C, lucky me to find the car that granny wanted A/C in.

Some cx's had a tach I believe, like mafioso102 said. Mine didn't. But with a CX that sudden bust of speed lets KNOW that you are in the power around 2k, eliminating the need for a tach j/k.

well if i do get a cx or vx without the tach how hard would it be to install an si cluster with the tach in it. i figure i will have to add some wires but how difficult is the change. also what r the motor specs on the the cx and vx. also how good is the dx model. i dont ever hear of people talk about them that much. also what models have such things as disk brakes all around. also which one would u suggest if i am later going to be swapping the motor. more than likely a b16 or maybe a c5 if finances are right at the time. since i am from the older car gen. will i need to worry about obd1 or obd0 and switching the car for them. also will i need a mount kit for the swap. thanx for any help. feel free to include your own suggestions and opinions about each model. i am just trying to gain as much knowledge as possible in a short amount of time so i can make a good choice on which car to purchase.

I call bullshit on this one. If you had a tach, somebody put one in as a swap in later, or it wasn't a CX - or some tech in Canada had too many Molsen Goldens.

LOL, that is what I was thinking

My CX came with a tach too *buddy*...but it is an *EX* tach that was added later.
So...if you did have a tach, it was installed by someone else...OR, not sure here, maybe the dealer swaped them out if you really wanted one that badly.

My old DX had no tach, so I bought an EX tach and all I did was plug it right in. The tach worked fine. No need to mod on the DX at least (and I doubt on a VX).

The CX has 70 hp and the VX around 94 hp I beleive.

The DX is nice, but middle of the road...if you read my old post you will see why (a few extra features here and there, more sound deadning, bigger gas tank, etc.)...just more of a pain to bring down the the CX/VX weight really.

The SI is the only one with disk brakes all around and not necessary IMO. These cars weigh nothing, and unless you will be hardcore track runner, you won't need them.

If you are swapping, then I would go with the VX (seem rarer to me though)...or a CX is great too. Wiring is the only real difference which makes the VX a bit easier (so I have read, due to having VTEC wiring already). In addition, the VX has lightweight wheels (9lbs. each, but only 13"x5"). However, you can sell them for up to $200 (for all 4).

You will be fine with an OBD1 car, I don't remember when OBD2 starts, 95-96 sounds right (it has been awhile). But aim for a 1992-1993 anyway, they are slightly lighter than the 1993+ modles anyway (passenger airbags I think). Then just buy an OBD1 motor to make things easy (get a del sol b16a or JDM b16a).

Both motors you mentioned will mount up using stock mounts. Same chasis.

ok i am definitly look for a vx or if i find a nice si at a reasonable price. the vx seems a lil easier to do the swap on and the moderate HP could be bareable for a few months. if i have to go with a more expensive model i might as well get the si so it is between those 2. do u guys have any good sites that i can search at besides ebaymotors or autotrader. i am so anxious to get this projest started. and yes if u want to know my future intentions with this car it will be a never ending project. i am a race car driver by trade and power and handling are all that matters. with every vehicle i have owned i have thrown comfort to the wind and concentrated on speed. thanx for all the help so far. i think i will enjoy working in this forum u guys seem generally more pleasant than the EF crowd.
