The guy i bought this from said its a spun bearing. I got it for a low ball price and thought i can re-build it. Where do i start?

You will have to completely tear it apart. There is probably metal all through it.

Almost definitely, but depends on how long it was ran like that.

Hopefully you got the "bare" block for cheap

How much did you get it for, and what was included?

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it then, 60 is a steal even for a Bare block.

Word, If OP paid like 200-300 for the block then I would have said he got ripped off. But $60 for a block with matching mains, that's a deal in itself.

You could save yourself a lot of trouble and trade it or sell it for one that isn't screwed up.

So trade a possibly fk'd crack, for a good one? How would you go about doing that?

Depending on how bad it is, the journal might only need slight resurfacing,
and if that doesn't work, just buy a new(used) crank, and put it together.

It sounds like something an idiot would say. Rims dont have parts. He got the thing for $60, so trade it plus cash for one that isn't screwed up and save yourself a lot of time and effort. Is that really so hard to understand?

What about buying an LS crank and rods with ARP rod bolts for cheap and enjoy your extra displacement.

Assuming he can do all the work himself then why not. I'm just trying to say that you don't want to go and spend more to repair the damn thing then what one in working order is worth.

I would say the best thing to do is purchase new internals(pistons, rod bearings) Usually when a engine is ran with no oil the rod bearings are first to go.. n this one looks pretty bad..so i say you also check the main bearings...gsr's have alot of aftermarket support it should be easy to find the parts.
Good luck

The last pic labeled "crank", is that a main bearing journal or a rod journal?

Couple things, look at the picture closely, it's easily distinguishable.
And, the bearing was spun on the rod, so it can't be the main journal.

Also, that crank looks pretty bad,
but any machine shop should be able to tell you if it's junk or not for cheap/free.

Well i didn look at the pic closely. If you looked at the rod bearings and saw that kind of damage, wouldnt you worry about the main bearings too?

Yes any machine shop could tell you if it's junk or not, but are they gonna know your engine specifics to give you a valid answer.

Lol, what kind of dmg? It's actually not that bad.

Now if there was dmg to the walls of that cylinder, or maybe a hole in the block,
I would suspect the main journals near that rod then.

The rod journals get oil from the main journals. so i would think if one of my rod bearings was spun it wasnt getting oil, so i would check the main journal also...
