what is the purpose of this? from what people tell me its to create a stiffer sidewall thus providing better handling, but at the cost of pooping a bead. i was just wondering because i plan to buy a new set of wheels and tires soon so i want to figure out my fitment before hand.

You are referring to mounting tires on wheels that are wider than the widths approved by the tire manufacturer. There is NO performance advantage to doing this. As you already indicate, it's unsafe. In addition to the possibility of popping (or pooping
) a bead, you also have the significant possibility of tire failure due to excessive stress and heat buildup in the sidewalls. So it's a BAD IDEA all around.
Stick with the tire size that's best for your car, mounted on wheels whose width is within the range approved by the tire manufacturer. If you're looking for the best handling, concentrate on getting the best, stickiest tires you can get in the right size for your car.

People do it to fit low offset wheels on their cars. I plan on getting some fairly low offset wheels but im staying within the approved tire width range. If any modifications need to be done ill be doing it to the fenders, not to my tire size.
When you run aggressive fitment, you're pushing the edge of the wheel out towards, sometimes past, your fender. It order to make the wheels fit on the car (without rubbing), you need to run a slimmer, more "round" sidewall. VIP, Euro, drift styled cars usually do this to achieve that magic stance and wheel fitment.
This is typically used for looks to get good wheel fitment, but drifters tend to do this as well as they end up with stiffer sidewalls.
Tire wear also increases when you stretch tires, and this when used in combination with negative camber, can lead to a lot shorter tire life. We usually change tires once a year.
So if there's no real performance gain, tires wear faster, and in the end it costs more money, why do we do it you ask?
Because fitment like this is the SHHHHHHIIIIITT.

Doesn't cost any more or less initially. Just in the long run when you have to buy more tires.
If you are also running camber, what you can do half way through the tire's life is, flip the tires left to right and vise versa. The will even out the wear and boom, tire life x2 hahah :D

I'll actually take that back and say, initially you'll save money on tires since you are buying a smaller tire, but in the long run it will cost you more since you have to replace your tires more often.
At the same time though, almost everyone I know who stretches tires are wheel ****** and switch wheels all the time...so if your tires are bald, sell em and buy new ones! :D
