My personal opinion in the 92-95 Civic Si/EX transmission.

Some people think that the longer the gears, the better for boost, but there is a limit to that and there is such a thing as having too tall of gearing. The DX tranny might not be too bad, but the CX/VX tranny would suck horribly as they are just too long.

People making 400+whp on boosted B series stuff prefer GS-R trannies and even those are shorter than any 92-95 Civic D tranny, so you have to figure that a D tranny can't be too short for a boosted D16Z6.

BTW:

You cannot tell what type of 92-95 D tranny it is by looking at the tranny code alone. They'll all be S20 no matter if it's the CX/VX, DX, or Si/EX tranny.

The way you tell a Si/EX tranny frok all the others is that just above the fill plug (big 17mm bolt by where the right CV inner joint sticks into the tranny) there will be a B000 cast in the tranny casing itself. A000 means it's the non-Si/EX tranny and the only way to tell if it's a DX tranny rather than a CX/VX tranny is to split the case and start counting teeth, and doing math.

An excellent D tranny page is Mista Bone's Page complete with gear ratios, etc.

True.

I would suggest though that if you're going all out then the absolute best ever tranny would be the tranny out of the JDM EG Special/Anniversary Edition that came with an OBD1 DOHC ZC engine in it. That tranny has equal length axles with intermediate shaft (to reduce torque steer) and the factory LSD.

...but where are you going to find one?

Also I'd suggest the next best thing in the form of a 92-95 Si/EX box with a Quaife LSD in it.

To add to the suggestion of the d15b... Thats what i have and its a good tranny. Perfect for the steets. But it redlines at 6500 rpm. A long tranny would be the best. Something out of like a 99 hatch

Sorry but the transmission has NOTHING to do with your redline. Your redline is set by the ECU itself.

Also your suggestion of a longer tranny from a "99 hatch" is too vague. A 99 hatch tranny is shorter than the 92-95 CX/VX tranny and the 96-00 HX 5-speed tranny.

If you actually care about the 5th gear then it's a matter of pulling the case apart and literally counting the teeth on the 5th gear mainshaft and countershaft then doing the math (divide one by the other - can't remember, but if you do it both ways one way equals the exact 5th gear ratio ) to determine which one you have. Two actual gears make up the "5th gear" in the tranny.

Yes. Boosted or not those gears (even if it's the DX) are too long.
