Barely OT: Potential oiling issues on B18C1
Changed the oil in my roommate's stock '99 GS-R tonight (30,5xx miles). He drives like a grandma - no warmup, no cooldown, short distances - all that bad crap. I've been changing his oil with Honda filters and 10w30 Mobil 1 for the past 15,000 miles (hey, he buys me
to do it).
Here's the deal - tonight's oil change showed me something I had never experience before. In all my previous oil changing experiences, with my Type R, both Volvos, the Scout, Meech's GS-R, and Beth's Taurus and LeBaron - the filter has always been half-filled with oil, which promptly dumps all over my arm when I take the filter off.
Tonight - filter was dry as a bone. Not a single drip from it. It did have a bit of oil trapped in there - was slightly heavier than new filter, and I could hear some sloshing. But even turning it upside down didn't get any oil out of it.
Cause for concern? Alarm? He claims the car is driving fine...

Bah. You're taking bandwidth away from the useful replies
Where u on an incline?
Rguy, who gives his baby a 15 second warm up and cool down, since it takes WAY to long to get that needle up when just idling.

Oh my bad... was the motor warm or has it been sitting over night? My ol' 79 pimp daddy LTD used to do that every once in a while. But then again, I only changed the oil every 15k miles or so
No incline. Flat garage floor.
He drove it home from work - put it in the garage and left the fan on it for about 2 hours. Oil was still hot enough to **** me off when I yanked the drain plug. Also noticed a "burned spot" on the inside of the filter - hard to explain, might have to take a pic.
'79 LTD?? Hell yeah!

This normal? Notice burned oil spot, indicated by arrow. I don't recall looking that closely at my Integra filters, and I can't find an old one

Maybe it could have been a bad filter. OEM Honda, off the same shelf as I always used in my Type R. Changed every 3k-3.5k miles. But I've never seen a "dry" filter like that before...
Owner reports no difference in normal driving. Car probably hasn't seen redline this year tho - perhaps B18's need to see hard driving from time to time?

. as long as the oil gets about 15 seconds to cycle in.....
most likely a bad filter from the pics.

never have had that problem before
Burned spot or no excess oil in filter?
Burned spot or no excess oil in filter?
though changing oil on my friends `95 GS-R some time ago, i noticed zilch oil contained in the filter either, yet hes never had a problem with the car.
strange indeed, specially the burn spot?
how much oil did you get out of it?
do the change, it looks like the problem is local to the filter, and so with a new filter you shouldn't have any problems.
Tweakie - who checks his oil atleast once every 3 days....

I will ask the owner to check weekly. Might take filter by the local Acura shack and let the service folk take a look.

I don't think this is a problem, depending on the oil filter that you use. I just noticed this weekend (when I was changing my oil) that there was a strange black "magnet" looking thing on the bottom of the oil filter. I went back to some of my old filters and noticed the exact thing. You picture is normal.
It's a Honda filter. And it looks to be burned-on oil, not something attached to the filter. I checked the new filter, and there was nothing but bare metal in that area.
I will try to dig up one of my old Type R filters and compare. Unless someone who's about to do an oil change would be willing to check theirs and post

Jason-
who'll be changing his oil tomorrow for CMP, and will take pics of his filter.
Change the PCV valve, check gaskets and hoses. Lower weight of oil...

Thanks for the info, at any rate. PCV is probably gummed up, because my roommate drives the car like an old woman.
