Default Engine oil leaking from the transmission??? (Pics inside)

A few days ago i thought i had a rear main seal leak on my 96 Accord EX Automatic tranny (170k miles)

I cleaned the bottom of the motor and transmission.

Removed the transmission, and noticed that the inside the transmission housing where the driveplate and the torque converter were...it was clean. No oil leaks no drips, no lines of oil...nada.

So i put everything back together. double checked some more, cleaned some more, and i think i know where my engine oil is leaking from..but why?

The oil seems to be leaking from the part of the transmission where the driveshaft is inserted.

It only leaks on the drivers side of the transmission, and I have included a link to a picture album.

It is coming from the hole where you insert the drivers side drive shaft.

And YES it is engine oil, not transmission fluid.

Is there a seal there? why is it engine oil? could i still have a leaky rear main seal?

From the picture...you can see the trail of engine oil leaking out

more pics..

It appears to be leaking from the Output Shaft seal. This can be accessed with the removal of the offending axle. The seal mounts in the transmission / differential case.

In pic #8 you can see the oil is coming from up above; check dist Oring and oil press sending unit.
If it's a Vtec engine the solenoid is mounted to the head right above that area.

The best thing to do is get a couple cheap cans of spray brake clean, blast down the entire area/back of block etc.

Spray around with Dr Scholls foot powder spray, then go for a drive...recheck

Output shaft seal and possibly input shaft/rear main as well.

Maximum parts cost: $30.00
Maximum time to be spent: 3 hours.

Most likely scenario: $15.00 and 45 minutes.

I had the exact same problem on my 95. fresh oil running down the transmission. It was the VTEC or spool valve. remove the three bolts and replace the seals...its an easy, cheap fix. If it was dirty oil then I would look else where. I replaced my axle seals mistakingly thinking its was tranny fluid only...actually I had a mixture of the two...my luck.

Funny, the Honda tech kept insisting it was a cam seal. was suprised when I told them it was a spool valve...seems at the dealer those never leak.
