Default Automatic Transmission Slipping Question HELP!

This is my wife's 2000 honda civic ex with around 98000 miles. Recently the D4 Light/Transmission will cut out and it feels like im in neutral for 2-3 sec then it cuts back in to drive, then will cut out periodically and so on. Also a weird funny smell comes out of the vents.

Any suggestions?

You can jump the service connector and get the D4 light to flash codes in the same way as you can with a check engine light, i'd try that first. Might be a bad lockup solenoid. Other than that, check the fluid, see if it smells burnt, if its not electronic the transmission is probably bad and will need to be rebuilt or replaced.
