block numbers!! b series..... is it stolen or not????
the number on the block below b18b or b18c or b20b on b series motors how can i check to see if its legit if im buying a block from a person on craigslist or from a shop or a friend?????
anyone have a legit source to check the numbers??
anyone have a legit source to check the numbers??
That number is not a serial number. Many blocks will have the same number.Only 1996 and up blocks will have a metal tag riveted to the block near the oil pan rail. That tag actually is a serial number.
so those numbers on the block dont mean shiz??
well then how would you get new vins?
my friends gsr used to be in a show car and it was all clean and polished when i got it..
he took the vins off to make it look cleaner
what should i do??

If you know everything than why did you ask.Your in CA so your screwed. From what I hear they will take your car if the numbers aren't there or they don't match. But I'm sure you know this also.Get a legit block with papers and save the hassle of getting your car towed away. But i guess you know this too.

Call the local CHP office. They will help you out. Depending on the office, they may or may not need you to bring in the block.
If the seller doesnt want to give you the block stamp # and/or the VIN # Tag #.. then its obviously fishy. Because once you call the CHP and give the info.. if it comes up stolen then next things next.. "Where did you get this from?" "Can we please have their contact info." Etc, etc, etc.

94-96 i believe the 6 digit number under b16 and other, thats what cops use to trace the motor. and then 96 and up are vin tags. i mean if you look it up cops are gonna come after you and then that guy who has that motor. Just forget about it and search else where. Its gonna get too messy...

Thats exactly the [freak]ed up attitude that needs to be changed in the Honda scene. Too many people are getting jacked and too many shops and buyers/sellers are irresponsible about checking into whether or not their parts are legit.
Do your homework first so you dont get burned later. If the seller or shop is offering legit parts then they dont have anything to worry about with you checking into their parts.

thanks for the replies but if you dont have any helpful and legit info just bump it!
ok so heres the scoop!
my friend got out of the scene this motor was in his show car Body kit wide body ect which was a 96 gsr integra..
he took off the vins on the trans and the block to shine everything up to make it look cleaner ect.. he sold the shell and i got the motor.. i highly dought its stolen this guy didnt need to buy stolen shiz he has money! and the car was never in need of a new motor so it has to be the original motor..
im just tryin to see if those numbers on the block can be read by chp or who not to see if i can get new vins so i dont get messed with by cops thinkin its stolen cuz it has no vins! im not worried.. i know the guy i got it from he has nothing to hide..
so for sure if i give the chp the block number can they look to see what vin # is suppose to be on there??

Just call CHP first.. thats where you can start. If they will help you out, great. The CHP office in the Tustin/Santa Ana office area used to help me out if I had questions/issues, but when OCATT jumped into the stolen honda's scene in the late 90's they pretty much did everything. I dont know about Highland.
Now, if your in OC, and need info on a motor/trans/whatever. You call the local police dept, and they direct/transfer you to the OCATT receptionist. That person takes a phone number and one of the detectives calls you back. 99% of the time they want to physically look at the motor so they can judge on whether or not the VIN has been changed/modified, etc. Ive called in probably about 20 motors and trannies in the days I was running a shop, and I think all but 1 time they came out to see the goods. If it came up stolen or suspicious, then the goods are confiscated while they investigate. If all is well, then they were returned within a couple of weeks.
Now on the flip side.. if you bought a motor that was spicy, and dropped it in your car, and were pulled over and the cops THEN found it hot. Then your car is impounded for a minimum of 30 days while they call the original owner or insuarance company that wrote off the claim. That person or persons then can pretty much strip out anything that shows up as stolen or they can claim was stolen. So even if you had a legit head and trans but the block was spicy then if the original owner had their entire transplant ripped off then you better believe all of your transplant will be gone. I dont even know if you EVER get your car back anymore. It may become scrap metal.
Ive seen both sides of this story, so save yourself the hassle and check on everything now. If your friend has stolen **** then dont buy it or if he thinks he may, then tell him to check it out and get a report from the CHP or OCATT or whatever and handle it so hes not passing on his problems to you.

I take every motor i buy for cheap to the CHP office in east L.A. I have lost a few blocks but no arrests!
just save your *** some time and go to the nearest Main CHP office and tell them your situation and what you want to do.
Normally its the commercial guys who end up checking my block the a computer base.
And if the block checks out clean have them copy a printout and also stamp and sign the printout out with their badge number!
Thats what i do just so i dont have to worry when i bring the drag car out onto the streets

so they can run the numbers on the block if its 96 and up?? and what about jdm blocks i heard if the number doesnt come up then they can impound your car..

They can trace the original vehicle VIN to the block stamp (below the b16a, etc, etc) but it takes more research. If I had a pre-96 motor/trans without the vin plate riveted on then it just took the PO a little more time to get me answer on it. Most of the time OCATT could get me an answer within an hour or less. Thats how dialed in they were/are.
JDM blocks/trans are a whole different monster. You have to have a bill of sale with the sellers contact info including a DL # or ID # selling it to you if you are putting it in your car. Keep a couple of copies of the Bill of Sale in the glove box or whatever alontg with copies of receipts for your wheels, interior, whatever so you look as legit as possible when you get rolled. If for some reason you dont have any proof that you bought the JDM motor or transplant legit and there is ANY reason they wanted to impound your car or think you may be suspicious, then they will.
No sweat on the help mang'. Always here to try to help.
