is that wise or just plain cheap on my part. I usually change my oil every 3500 hundred miles and the filter. So is it wise to change the filter every 7000 thousand miles?

 

I change mine a every oil change. What's a few more dollars for piece of mind.

 

Buy your oil and fram filters at Walmart. You can do the oil and filter change for about $14.00.

Whats the point to run clean oil through a dirty filter? Alot of companies recommend to change the oil filter more often then the oil. I know this is the case with all synthetic oil, unless you run a "synthetic oil" filter which is supposed to hold up to the duration of the oil change intervul.

I dont see the point to cheap out on an oil change as it can be done for less then $20, even with a dealer filter.

As long as you change the Oil AND the Oil Filter when you convert to synthetic; you should have no problems.

i have like 180xxx and i use 10w 40 cause its thicker

 

Honda's oil filer recommendations are as follows for what they call normal driving...problem is no one fits into "nomal driving" except those that make long road trips under ideal conditions (newer cars have a monitoring system that tells you when it is time to change the oil so the following does not apply)

a. 7.2K oil change filter every 14.4K

b. every 3500miles change filter and oil for "severe" driving conditions. again no one really falls under that unless you are running a taxi service or spend the car's entire life making 5 min trips.

you can save yourself a fair amt of money over the long run if you change your oil and filter every 5-6K. I am lucky, I have access to a oil analysis lab and I can easily go 8K between changes if I wanted to on regular dino oil.....but I change every 6K oil and filter

 

Following along these lines, I use synthetic oil and use the maintenance required light to keep track of my oil changes. Once it turns yellow, I know that soon I need to be heading to the store to buy oil. Once it hits red, I change the oil. (7,500) I like in Jacksonville, so most of my trips are 20+ minutes.

 

I don't know, I change my oil & filter every 3,000 miles with 5w-30 just to avoid any BS

that oil is wayyy to thick, unless you live in a hot environment year around, correct me if i am wrong

 

A 5wx30 in the winter and a 5Wx40 in the summer will go you well in the Great State of Pennsylvania.
The 5W will keep it flowing during those cold starts and minimize those brief moments while oil pressure builds.
the 30 is a standard viscosity when the engine is at operating temp.
For some place like Juno Alaska, or Manitoba a 5W x 20 would be called for.
I like to 'tick' it up one notch in the summer to maintain oil viscosity under hotter conditions.

1. I know the owner's manual may say that a filter can last 15,000 miles under normal driving, but just change it every change. Use Honda OEM filters, they aren't expensive when you buy them online - http://www.handa-accessories.com sells six for $27.xx plus shipping. Be sure to buy crush washers for the drainplug too, cheap insurance against leaks. I use Castrol GTX, my cost for an oil change is about $16.

2. Switching to synthetic... why? I used to use synthetic in my Volvo, but it was a turbo. Both of my current cars ('99 Accord, '95 Camry) are I4's without turbo, I just use regular oil, the engines aren't burning that hot to necessitate synthetic. But if you do want to do it... just do it and put in a new filter as mentioned above. Swithing to synthetic will knock loose some crud in the engine so after 1,000 miles after the 1st synthetic oil change, do another change. After that you can go 5,000 miles easy between changes. Mobil 1 is what I used to use, the cheapest place to find it was at Wal-Mart - 5 quart jugs for $20 or $21 (price as of a couple years ago).
