Default New motor won't crank. Timing?

Just got done with my first swap. Old y8 threw a rod so i got a y7 block rebuilt. well i've got everything together now but the car won't crank. It has spark and fuel pressure. I tried some starting fluid in the intake. It will turn over all day long but no crank. Any ideas?

unless u really buggered the timing it should atleast jump and try to start.. check ur grounds if its bumping but just wont catch try rotating ur distributor

Have you compression tested the cylinders?

well. like i said. it's my first swap. and sometimes i'm pretty stupid. so it's possible that it's buggered. already tried the distributor as many ways as i could.

If one or more cylinder has substantially lower pressure than the others, then you likely have identified the no-start cause. You can add oil to the cylinder during the test -- if the pressure increases, then the piston ring is bad. You can also do a leak down test to identify other potential causes:

If you had a ground problem, either the starter would not crank or the engine would lack spark or fuel.

A piston ring would cause the motor not to start? i thought it would just produce smoke and bog the motor down.

If cylinders are unable to hold pressure, then the force of the combustion cannot turn the engine. Related to this idea, is your engine possibly flooded.

Also check whether your mechanical timing is off, that is whether the cam and crank are not synchronized at TDC1.

interestingly enough, the thermostat housing wasn't grounded. but that didn't solve the problem. I've been trying to find a write up about checking the mechanical timing. does one exist here?

The important thermostat wire grounds the ECU, so theoretically the engine should have lacked both spark and fuel.

Lol. but.. it didn't. I'm pretty good at having really odd stuff happen to me. could a missing knock sensor have anything to do with the problem?

Update. Fixed the timing. checked grounds.. transmission ground wasn't in. Car cranked and ran poorly for 5 seconds or so and died.

bump. need some help. gotten it to start twice.. both times barely ran for a very short amount of time and died. when giving it a little gas trying to start it will try very hard to crank but won't get going all the way. catches and fires all cylinders i believe, but won't go all the way. any ideas?

should mention that this car sat for nearly a year before now.

You need to know the difference between cranking and running and you're not helping much by running two diferent message threads on the same problem.

have we even checked by putting a screw driver in the end to see if your getting spark if so u should know ur getting fuel if the plugs saturated when u pull it. maybe re check ur cam timing and has it had a valve lash?

not two threads on the same subject. this thread is older and about my car not running. other is newer when the car is now running and blowing white smoke. that's all
