bad axle, tranny or clutch?
Hey guys im new to this site. but i just bought a 94 civic with a gsr swap from a 95 teg. i kinda got screwe over and have to replace some stuff. cam and crank seals, timing belt, thermostat, and battery. but when i bought the car i really didnt notice this noise but it seems to be getting worse as i drive it. ok heres the problem... when im driving and take my foot off the gas i hear like this droning/rubbing noise coming from what sounds to be like the transmission. now the guy rigged the axle and put an intake clamp around the torn boot and it always hits the oil pan which is causing problems. so im replacing the drivers side halfshaft tomorrow. but i was just wondering if anyone knew what the problem might be? oh and someone was telling me about the spindles... idk
i think a little more info is needed. Does the noise happen all the time or just on acceleration? Does it happen in every gear or just one? If you could get a sound clip that would really help.
yeah it first started out in just 1st and 2nd gear and now its in all of them except for 5th. i took it to cottman and a local shop and they said it was the bearings in the trans and i took it to midas and they said it was something in the axles s im lost. but yeah it only happens when im accelerating and i take my foot off the gas
yeah i just changed it. no metal shavings or anything. now i heard different things... to either use 10w-30 (what the book says), mtf, or heavy weight gear oil. i used 10w-30 when i changed it. but yeah i was leaning towards a bearing in the trans too but wasnt sure
also everything is matched up with the front axles and everything. so i dont think it could be anything in there bc if he used the stock civic axles, they wouldnt even match up right?
definaly could be a bearing in ur trans. i would always use honda tranny fluid. a lil more info on the noise maybe cluthc in or out is there noise? average speed wen noise? or accelerating?

it goes away if the clutch is pressed in and it only happens when i take my foot off the gas to downshift or just slow down

not necessarily.
OP: If you leave the car in neutral and press the clutch in, does the noise go away, but return when you let the clutch out?
not necessarily.

well i just changed the left halfhaft a couple days ago and i used one from a 95 gsr and it fit perfectly so it cant be the spindles. so im pretty much guaranteeing its the bearings in the trans
What this guy said. If the noise goes away when you push the clutch pedal in and disengage the clutch, then comes back when you let the pedal back out it's most likely the throw-out bearing. It could also be a bad bearing in the transmission. Depending on if it still makes the noise in different gears or all ranges will help you diagnose the problem too. If it makes it the noise in all ranges except for 5th like you said then the only time it won't make the noise is in overdrive. In this case, you'd have to take a look at a transmission power flow chart to see which components aren't being used in 5th that are being used in 1-4. This could pinpoint an exact problem for you, or just plain tell you if it's a problem in the transmission.
