Default IGNITION HELP PLEASE!!! CAR WON'T STAY ON!!!

When I put the key in the car and start it, it starts right up, but once I let go of the key, the car shuts off. I thought it was like the battery or something, but I think it's something with the ignition because when I turn the key on to power everything on including windows and radio but not the engine, it doesn't lock into place unless I turn it a certain way. So I think for sure that it has to do something with my ignition. What is it, and what part do I need to replace? Please help in any way if you can. Thanks.

Is replacing it pretty easy? Just undo some screws and bolts and I'm good?

Thanks for everyones help. But I'm confused now. One person told me to replace the ignition switch but says its the part where you put the key in. But then when I look up what an ignition switch is, it's on the left side of the steering wheel. So what should I replace?

Go to the link above and it will explain how the "lock cylinder" is on the right side of the steering wheel and is where the key goes. Then the ignition switch is on the left side, just like you observed.

The links at the site I gave have excellent pictures on how to replace the switch... Take the time to read it and then ask more questions. It is not long. :-)

Go to http://www.bkhondaparts.com . Put in your car's info, then go to the electrical section. Select "combination switch." The ignition switch will be item 1 on the drawing that comes up. Type in the part number at the top, and the site will tell you what other models use it. If your car is an automatic, then the part number is 06350-SR4-A10, and all 92-95 auto tranny Civics use it. If your car is a manual, then the part number is 06350-SR4-A00, and all 93-95 manual tranny Civics use it.

Without more info, I would not roll the dice on a 97 switch working for your 94. Sometimes the part numbers and illustrations do not tell all about compatibility, but in this case both the part numbers and drawings (for the 94 and 97) are different.

as lioness chick stated.... dont roll them dice.....the part numbers are different.... and yes there is a difference between the auto and manual....

97 civic
Honda part# for manual is 35100S01A01
Honda part # for auto is 35100S01A11

94 civic
Honda part # for manual 35100SR3A03
Honda part # for auto is 35100SR3A13

just save the time and hassle and get the right part the first time..... replace it and get your whip back on the road..... guessing and modifying takes alot longer and can sometimes get you in WAY over your head......just some advice...

Thanks. I appreciate your guys' help a lot.

But if I were to find a 92-95 ignition switch. What would I have to do if I got a manual one instead of an automatic. I need to get this car up and running for me and my sister. Thanks for your guys' help again.
