I Think My Engine Jumped Timing After a Cam Gear Install! *HELP!*
ok, i put an aem adjustable cam gear on my car because i got it as a trade from a friend. so i got it installed and everything and the timing belt seemed to be tight enough. so i take it for a test drive, come back and check everything, and everything seemed to be good. i guess i overlooked the marking on the cam gear/ belt, but i was showing my friend and i noticed my belt jumped 7 teeth. the cam gear was at stock setting, and the car is a 97 civic ex. i drove the car home and it seemed to be fine.
i need to know if u think it bent my vaves or messed up anything else.or if u have some advice. i didnt hear any odd noises either

wow, thats all i have say.
but how did you find out that jumped 7 teeth?
what must've have happened was the timing belt tensioner was not tightened down good.
it happened to me when i did my headgasket.
but to find out if you bent anything at all is to do a compression and or a leakdown test.
from what i know is that a leakdown is much more effiective.
what i would like to know is was it still running when you checked it? does it idle smooth? how does it run when you drive it?

not sure how u could have had the belt loose enough for it to jump 7 teeth are u sure that the gear was tightened down correctly or its not striped? and if u managed to drive it home and not even notice anything im sure nothing is wrong.. it would be clacking and making all kinds of scary noises if the valves or anyting was bent

i made a mark on the timing belt and cam gear right after i installed it. and yes it idles smoth and runs fine, but wen i drove it home i was shifting at 3k

If your looking at the mark you made on the TB then forget it. The mark you need to be looking for is the one on the crank pully to make sure that it's lined up with the arrow head.
Then making sure the cam gear is lined up with the head.

I bet your fine and didnt jump any teeth.

When you start the car now does it idle normal and drive normal.???
You can't go by the mark you made on the belt, the cam gear have to make many turns before that belt will come back to the top where you made the mark.

No offense but why would you install a cam gear if you don't know where the TDC marks are on the engine?
You set everything at TDC FIRST before you do any timing belt related work.
Do you have a lower timing cover? If so there is a sight line or nipple on it that you need to line up the timing mark on the crankshaft. The mark on the crank pulley is the white one all by itself.
Once that is lined up you need to make sure the TDC timing mark on the cam gear lines up with the marker on the inner plastic timing cover behind it.
If everything lines up you're fine. Again for the 6th time you cannot judge anything by a mark you put on the t-belt itself because when the engine rotates it's not a perfect 1:1 ratio therefore it will look off most every time you look at it.

The cam gear spins faster then it takes for the belt to make a full rotation therefore the mark on the belt will only once be on the same mark a sparse amount of time.
Have you ever tried to sync your turn signal with the car in front of you? You will notice that only one to two blink will ever be in sync. Same goes for the timing belt

The problem is, and why I've not answered your Q about cam timing mark/marks, is that you have an aftermarket cam gear. I can tell you that the stock cam gear has it's timing marks at approx. the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock postions and they are to line up level with the cylinder head's deck surface while the "UP" is facing up on the gear.
Aftermarket cam gear? Who knows? Hopefully it has exact marks in the 3 and 9 o'clock postions, but I don't know.

he's just not listening cos the answers don't make sense to him yet. Just got lucky putting it back together I guess.
Why he change it without understanding timing marks is beyond me.

Are you serious??!?! 1 tooth off on a t-belt will make your engine run like **** if at all. You shouldn't be working on your car with out a manual like previously stated. And for the record unless you have some crazy jdm d16y8 that is a one off engine from honda's assembly room, you sir do not have an automatice tensioner.

a tech at honda, which has been a tech for 30 years and owns a 98 ex coupe(d16y8) told me that

Well this assumes that you installed the cam gear without the camshaft moving at all. since you did not even know to line everything up at TDC and recheck after the install there's a good chance it's off a tooth or two regardless of the engine having an auto tensioner.
Also unless you literally loosened the tensioner bolt and let the spring pull the tensioner out and pull slack out of the belt then it doesn't matter about the "automatic" part of the tensioner if you don't know how to actually engage it.
