Default Percentages??

I know this is an awful topic, but I was kind of curious on the ballpark of North American ITRs that are left. -/+ 50%??

Joe just posted the rough numbers from a year or two ago the other day in the BS thread. Not sure what page though.

Joe posted in April 2006, out of the 1002 98's sold, only ~600 were left with clean titles. This is a question that has been on my mind since seeing those numbers.

Those have got to be down big time since for the last couple of years there seems to be like 2-3 new stolen threads on the front page every week.

That number is an exaggeration. For example, the number of ITRs reported stolen in this forum in the past two weeks is exactly ONE (and that theft took place seven weeks ago). Unless you're counting this topic, in which the car wasn't stolen at all:

My R "Was" Stolen in CHICAGO

And Andy found that, according to the title status, crashes are responsible for the loss of more ITRs than thefts.

I'm not saying ITRs don't get stolen; they do. But we don't see 2-3 new stolen threads per week, and the title information is what it is.

EDIT: Changed number stolen.

I believe that. But thefts have to be a pretty decent number.

Incidentally, that represents an attrition rate for each model year as follows (assuming the same rate is applied each year up to 2006):

1997 ITR - 3.9 percent
1998 ITR - 5.0 percent
2000 ITR - 4.4 percent
2001 ITR - 4.9 percent

If you apply the same percentage attrition to each model year for the two years 2007-2008, here's how many are left with clean titles now:

1997 ITR - 207
1998 ITR - 600
2000 ITR - 945
2001 ITR - 825

Still, 1 does not equal 4-6.

So going by these numbers, it's safe to say about 66% of USDM ITRs with clean title are left?

Of course, the attrition takes place on a month-by-month (and day-by-day) basis, not in one big instantaneous jump each year. You would expect the number left to be 2577 (66.9 percent) at a certain point in 2008, as noted above, and 2457 (63.8 percent) at the same point in 2009. Right now, yeah, somewhere around 66 percent.

Of course, there are also some salvage title and theft title ITRs still around, too, and they are not included in these numbers.

Are these just honda-tech percentages and extrapolations of data? I haven't read the link or original data, but i know off-hand of 3 stolen ITRs that didn't have a mention on honda-tech.

My guess would be compairing the KNOWN VIN numbers to the titles/condition of titles...

So my guess is real world data, not guesses.

Correct. Andy looked them all up on Carfax. Those numbers have nothing to do with what's reported on honda-tech.

Yep. Hopefully within a year I'll run them all again out of curiosity. We'll see how it's changed. I'm gonna have to ask Andy how he managed to run 3,850 carfaxes without going insane

Yep. Those % numbers were of "always Clean Titled" ITRs. I'd say most of the dirty titled caRs eventually got Rebuilt titles. Haven't run those numbers....

haha nice! I kinda thought he might have used a comp to help. That's just a lot of carfaxes to do manually. I think he ran them all in under a week...dunno...haven't talked to him in awhile about it. I knew there was a script used to test all the possible VINs through Honda's ownerlink site....to see which ones were actually ITRs.

When I'm ready to do this again I'll talk to him first.....see if I can bribe him for that script

Don't be offended, but this needs to be talked about. Drivers need to be educated and fully aware of the theft risks. You can prepare for theft, and in doing so you do as much as you can to protect your investment(and insurance premiums).
